Women’s Swimming downs Division I Gardner-Webb, Barton at ECU Pirate Duels

Greeneville, N.C. —- For the second straight season, Catawba women's swimming opened the season with a win over Division I Gardner-Webb and Barton at the East Carolina Pirate Duels on Saturday afternoon.

Catawba earned a 217-43 win over Barton and bested Gardner-Webb 184-74. Host ECU edged the Catawba Indians 174-87.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

200 Yard Medley Relay

- Catawba's quartet of Lucie Cainaud, Sydney McKenzie, Brinkley Watson and Marit Reckmann opened up the season with wins over the GWU & Barton relay teams with a time of 1:47.80 in the 200 Medley Relay

 

1000 Yard Freestyle

- Fiona Byrne earned wins over GWU & Barton swimmers with a 10:34.62 posting

 

200 Yard Freestyle

- Ella Gutenwik earned points with a 1:56.60 effort in the 200 Free

 

100 Breaststroke

- McKenzie paced Catawba swimmers in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:05.96

 

50 Yard Freestyle

- Reckmann earned the top time among all swimmers with a 23.91 mark

 

100 Yard Freestyle

- Reckmann followed up with another best time at the meet with a 52.85

 

200 Yard Breaststroke

- McKenzie earned points for the Catawba Indians in her debut, finishing ahead of Gardner-Webb and Barton competitors in the 200 Breast

 

500 Yard Freestyle

- Gutenwik bested ECU, GWU & Barton swimmers with the top time in the 500 Free, recording a 5:07.11

 

100 Yard Butterfly

- Freshman Sydney Peterson impressed in her collegiate debut, finishing just behind the top ECU swimmer in the 100 Fly with a 57.83

- Watson finished right behind her with a 58.55 showing

 

200 Yard IM

- McKenzie earned another top-three finish with a 200 IM time of 2:10.19

 

400 Freestyle Relay

- Catawba was first among all teams in the 400 Freestyle Relay, besting East Carolina by over three seconds with a 3:33.24
