Women's Volleyball outlasted by Wingate

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College women's volleyball team fired on all cylinders at the start, but fell behind and failed to keep pace with the Wingate Bulldogs in a 3-0 loss Tuesday night.

 

TEAM STATS

- The AVCA Top 25 vote-receiving Bulldogs (15-2, 7-1 SAC) hit a blistering .407 while the Catawba Indians (3-11, 1-6) logged an .044 clip despite hitting .133 in the opening set

- All 26 of Catawba's kills were assisted compared to Wingate's 35-of-37 mark

- The 'Dogs held an 11-1 lead in service aces, but the blue and white were superior in the percentage realm by a .930-.863 differential

- Wingate made eight stops at the net while Catawba had none

 

INDIVIDUAL STATS

- Jordan Danielson, Sydney Wattles, and Lillie Kate Rogers each recorded a team-high five kills

- In terms of percentage, Wattles and Sofia Beard led the way at .182; Beard, coming off a two-match hiatus, hammered three kills on 11 swings

- Danielson also notched the team's lone service ace, her first of the year, and collected five digs

- Haley Moffett topped the assists category with 18 dimes

- Kary Hales dug out 11 Bulldog attacks as Riley Hill joined her in double figures at 10 digs

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

- Rogers slammed back-to-back kills to open the contest, helping the Catawba Indians race out to a 4-1 advantage

- Miscues paired with spot-on attacks by Wingate let the 'Dogs overtake Catawba for the first time at 10-8

- Darts by Kelcie Love, Lauren Bodell, and Katie Clark combatted the visitors' offense, keeping the score close as Rogers landed her fourth kill to even it at 13-all

- The 'Dogs ultimately went on a 12-3 run, featuring Maya Van Heyst and Elsa Lamphere with two kills apiece, to lock up set No. 1 in 25-16 fashion

 

Second Set

- After Wingate collected the stanza's first two points, Clark and Rogers countered with blasts to level the score

- Lamphere continued to find success offensively, winning service at 9-3 before Wingate took off with five straight points including two Emily Johnson aces and a pair of blocks

- Sydney Morland dropped in three kills during a second run, hitting the 20-point mark

- Back-to-back raps by Wattles as well as a couple of late Beard kills kept the blue and white pounding, but Gabby Saye broke Catawba's serve to end the frame with a 25-14 triumph

 

Third Set

- Lamphere and Morland piloted the Bulldog offense early on, grooving to an 8-3 advantage

- Attack errors burned Catawba as Wingate's lead continued to mount, interrupted only by two Danielson kills

- The Wesley Chapel, Fla. product dealt an ace to cut the gap to 20-10 before Morland forced a side-out on the next rally

- On match point, recently-entered Rachel Gonzales tallied her lone kill of the night before Wingate's Jordan Griffin provided the deciding shot

The Catawba Indians' next challenge is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Anderson for a 7 p.m. match inside Abney Athletic Center.
