
Track & Field records fall at UNCC 49ers classic
Charlotte, N.C. – The Catawba College Men's and Women's Track and Field teams competed over a two-day stretch on Friday and Saturday at the UNCC 49er Classic, ending the second day of competition on Saturday afternoon having earned 18 individual finishes in the top-10 across multiple events and broken a pair of program record
Sprints & Hurdles
100M
- Mallory Witherspoontook eighth in the women's heat, clocking it at 12.38 and just .02 second behind the seventh place mark in a photo-finish. Lea Legros would place 19th, just being edged out in a crowded field as her time of 12.56 was right behind six other times between 12.50 and 12.55. Tabitha Gill would take 65thwith a time of 14.81
- Catawba's men earned two of the top-three spots, with Barja Walter and Winfred Porter taking 2nd and 3rd with respective times of 10.55 and 10.57 in a big-time showing. Mikell Simpson would take 47th with a time of 11.34, while Malik Hargrove placed 54that 11.49
100M H
- Simpson's time of 15.78 would break the previous Catawba record of 16.10 and would see her finish 28th, with Haleigh Washington taking a 39th placed finish after clocking in at 17.69
110M H
- In the men's heat, John Shearin IV took 20th with a time of 16.35
200M
- Witherspoon's time of 25.70 would give her a 27th placed finish in the women's heat, with Legros placing 10 spots behind her after a 26.12 effort. Zamearea Simpson would finish 67th at 27.02, while Gill placed 90thwith a time of 29.68
- Walter and Porter's fine form continued in the 200m, with Walter taking the crown by .10 with a winning time of 21.42. Porter made it two for Catawba in the top-10, clocking in at ninth with a time of 21.90. Alex Verity would take 82nd at 24.10, with Hargrove finishing 86thwith a time of 24.68
400M
- Gill would finish 69th in the women's heat with a time of 1:10.48
- Tyler Johnson claimed 21st in the men's heat at 50.18, followed by Jordan Grant (62nd, 53.47) and Verity (78th, 55.53)
400M H
- Alexis Devlin claimed 26th in the women's heat after a time of 1:11.61
- Shearin would take 27th in the men's heat with a time of 1:00.27, while Simpson would place 41st with a time of 1:06.87
Distance
5000M Open
- Rachel Overby claimed a top-20 finish in the women's heat, taking 20th with a time of 19:19.89
- Andrew Whitehead earned a top-10 finish for Catawba in the men's heat, earning a seventh-place finish after a 15:13.96 effort. James Shue nearly made it into the top-20, placing 22nd after a time of 15:29.05
5000M Invite
- Madi Clay cruised to a top-three finish in the women's heat, earning third after a time of 16:49.75. Hannah Caudill would take 13th with a time of 17:37.29
- For the men, Oussama Ajala would claim eighth place after a time of 14:48.72, as Stefan Lauchnerjust missed out on a top-10 finish with an 11th place mark of 14:52.22. Brannon Burns took 16th with a time of 14:59.66, and Tanner Smith would place 23rd at 15:30.81
1500M
- Raina Andrews earned a top-five finish for Catawba in the women's heat, posting a 4:33.40 effort and just edging out the sixth-place time of 4:33.40. Mikayla Jones' time of 4:37.63 nearly made it two Catawba runners in the top-10, placing her in 13th. Sydney Cockerham would place 44th with a time of 4:53.06, while Charity Davies would finish 86th at 5:16.54
- Erick Ramirez claimed a top-10 finish, clocking in at 10th after a time of 3:54.00 as hey edged out the 11th-best time by under a second. Will Lyons wasn't too far behind, taking 14th with a time of 3:55.69. Anthony Lecorche would place 30th with a time of 3:59.95, followed by Tommy Blackwell in 88th at 4:23.53
3000M
- Seth Caudill and EJ Threattrolled to a pair of top-10 finishes as Catawba placed four runners in the top-15. Caudill led the way with a runner-up performance where he was just beat out by .14 of a second; his final time of 8.34:77 became the second record breaking Catawba time of the day, beating the previous time of 8:36.58. Threatt earned a sixth place finish thanks to an 8:50.74 effort, followed by Eddie Urban at 13th with a time of 9:15.44 and Michael Martinez with a time of 9:17.37
Jumps & Throws
Long Jump
- In the women's heat, Washington would place 28thamong the field after a distance of 4.74m
- Javier Gomez-Wilson earned a top-three finish for Catawba in the men's heat, with his effort of 7.04 seeing him take third. Chris Brown was .02m away from joining Gomez-Wilson in the top-10, with his distance of 6.76 seeing him finish 11th. Drew Costello placed 26th at 6.31m
Pole Vault
- Seth Drake's mark of 3.85m would earn him a ninth-place finish
Triple Jump
- Gomez-Wilson and Brown were huge in the men's field, as the pair both earned top-five finishes. Gomez-Wilson would claim fourth place with a distance of 14.40m, followed by Brown in fifth at 14.27m
Shot Put
- Carmen Bishop's throw of 9.88m gave her a 44th-place mark in the women's competition
- In the men's competition, Jacob Scannell would place 39thwith a distance of 12.14m, with Adrian Rudisell in 42nd at 11.69m
Javelin
- Bishop earned a top-10 finish in the women's competition, claiming eighth place with a distance of 38.75m
- Dominick Gentile earned a 10th-place finish in the men's field thanks to a distance of 52.83m, while Anthony Baratta would place 35thwith a distance of 28.68m
Shot Put
- Rudisell would place 29thin the men's competition with a distance of 39.87m
Relays
4x400 Meter
Catawba's women would take a 14th place finish with a time of 4:22.42, with the men taking 17th in their field with a time of 3:27.59
4x800m
- Both Catawba teams would put in excellent showings, with the women claiming the runner-up spot thanks to a time of 9:26.62 and the men taking fourth place with a time of 7:59.65
