PREVIEW: #17 Women’s Soccer begins postseason run in SAC QF vs. Anderson

Salisbury, N.C. —- The third-seeded and 17th-ranked Catawba College women's soccer team kicks off postseason play at Frock Field on Saturday afternoon, facing sixth-seeded Anderson in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament.

- Who: (6) Anderson (8-6-2, 5-5-1 SAC) at (3) #17 Catawba (10-1-5, 8-0-3 SAC)

THE HISTORY

- Catawba leads all-time series 11-5-1

- The Catawba Indians have won the last seven games in the series, out-scoring the Trojans 16-1 in that span

- Catawba is 5-2-1 vs. Anderson at Frock Field, winners of the last three

- Third postseason matchup in the series; Catawba topped Anderson 1-0 in 2012 and 2018 SAC Quarterfinals

 

LAST MEETING

- Catawba rolled to a 5-1 win at Anderson on Oct. 5 behind four first-half goals

- After a draw to open up SAC play, the win marked the Catawba Indians' fourth straight SAC win of three goals or more

- Callie Hammond netted two goals in the opening 45 minutes

- Lillie Rusher netted the game-winner and added an assist

- Alexah Fite and Kelly Havens also scored

 

SAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

- Catawba is 17-6-1 in SAC quarterfinal games since 1999

- The Catawba Indians have won their last four SAC quarterfinal matchups dating back to the spring 2021 season

- Catawba is aiming for its eighth SAC Tournament title; the Catawba Indians claimed five tournament crowns in a seven-year span in the 1990s

- Only Carson-Newman (7) has as many SAC Tournament titles as the Catawba Indians

 

LEAGUE LEADERS

- Catawba led the South Atlantic Conference in goals scored, assists, points, goals allowed, shutouts and shots on goal allowed this season

- The Catawba Indians led the league in scoring for the fourth consecutive years

- Catawba conceded just four goals in 11 conference games with just 15 shots on goal

- Ashley Hughes paces the conference with eight shutouts in league play and a 0.37 goals-against average in SAC games

 

SCOUTING THE TROJANS

- Anderson is 4-2-2 in eight outings since falling to Catawba on Oct. 5

- The Trojans earned one-goal victories over Tusculum, Limestone, Carson-Newman and Newberry, while falling to Wingate and Coker, also by a single game

- In fact, the Trojans have not had a game decided by multiple scores since their 5-1 loss to the Catawba Indians over a month ago

- Freshman Ansley Douty scored a goal in each of her next four games after the Catawba loss and enters the quarterfinal with an assist in both of the Trojans' last two

- Anderson has not reached the SAC Semifinals in four trips to the SAC Tournament under current head coach Sarah Jacobs
