Gouge fans 10, #3 Baseball takes Sunday rubber match over Shippensburg

Salisbury, N.C. —- The 3rd-ranked Catawba College baseball team won its rubber match to take the series over Shippensburg at Newman Park on Sunday, as junior Casey Gouge struck out 10 Raiders across six innings to earn the win in the 13-1 Catawba victory.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Shippensburg 8-4

- Both teams recorded one extra-base hit

- Shippensburg committed two of three errors in the contest

- The Raiders left five runners on base, while the Catawba Indians stranded nine

- Catawba recorded three of four stolen bases on the afternoon

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- James Dunlap drove in a run on a single, walked and scored three times

- Cole Hales doubled, drove in two and scored twice

- Nathan Chrismon drove in two on a single, scored and stole two bases

- Ty Hubbard singled, drove in a run and scored twice

- Gouge earned the win, tossing six innings with just one run allowed on four hits and a walk, striking out a career-high 10 batter

- Brandon Rodgers and Hayden Simmerson combined to provide three innings of hitless relief, striking out three

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- Matthew Connolly's single through the left side loaded the bases with one out in the second

- Parker Styborski's walk drove in the opening run of the game

- Hales scored on a wild pitch and Chrismon drove in two on his single to left field as Catawba took an early 4-0 lead

 

THIRD INNING

- A hit-by-pitch, a walk and two balks scored a runner for Catawba without needing to put the ball in play to add to the lead, 5-0

 

FOURTH INNING

- The Catawba Indians loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs on three walks

- Dunlap's RBI single the other way scored a run and moved everyone up 90 feet

- Hubbard drove home Chrismon on a sacrifice fly to center field to lead 7-0

- Bryson beat out an infield single and Dylan Driver wheeled all the way around from second to score the eighth run for Catawba

- Two walks allowed another run to score before an error scored two more, as Catawba led 11-0 after four

 

FIFTH INNING

- Carter Hinds' RBI single to break up Gouge's shutout bid in the fifth

- Hales ripped a bases-loaded double down the left field line to bring in two more runners with Catawba on top 13-1

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba's midweek games originally scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday against North Georgia have been rescheduled to March due to incoming weather

- The Catawba Indians return to Newman Park on Friday to begin their opening series in South Atlantic Conference play against Anderson; first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
