Preview: #3 Baseball opens home slate with three-game set vs Shippensburg

Salisbury, N.C. —- The 3rd-ranked Catawba College baseball team opens its home schedule in 2025 on Friday afternoon, hosting Shippensburg for the first game of a three-game set at Newman Park.

THE HISTORY

- Catawba leads the all-time series 39-8

- The Catawba Indians and Raiders have played at least one game at Newman Park every year except one going back to 2015

- Catawba has won 14 of the last 15 matchups

 

PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF

- Reigning SAC Pitcher of the Year Payne Stolsworth was terrific in his 2025 season debut, tossing seven shutout innings in the 3-0 win at Lynn on Saturday, striking out 11 batters to just five hits and one walk allowed

- The Salisbury native picked up WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week honors

- He matched a career high in strikeouts, dating back to an 11-strikeout performance in an 8-inning, two-hit outing in a win over Mars Hill in April

 

NEWMAN PARK: NOT KIND TO VISITORS

- Catawba returns to Newman Park for the first time in 2025; the Catawba Indians were 32-4 at home during the 2024 season

- The mark earned Catawba the most home wins of any team in the country in 2024

- Catawba claimed the SAC regular season title, NCAA Super Regional berth and Southeast Regional championship at Newman Park in 2024

 

ANTICIPATED HOME DEBUTS

- Despite returning its entire starting weekend rotation and multiple all-conference bats, the weekend marks the anticipated home debuts for 12 Catawba Indians new to the team this year

- Nathan Chrismon, a shortstop transfer from East Carolina, went .333 with a double, a homer and four RBI in his first weekend of action with the team

- James Dunlap, Hunter Atkins and Matthew Connolly were other newcomers who earned a majority of the starts in the opening weekend for Jim Gantt's squad

 

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

- Shippensburg makes its season debut on Friday

- The Raiders were 27-21 overall and 19-13 in PSAC play, earning them a fourth-place finish in the league's East Division

- Shippensburg picked up six ranked wins over nationally ranked opponents, including a four-game sweep of 13th-ranked West Chester
