PREVIEW: Women’s Volleyball celebrates seniors in season finale Friday

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College women's volleyball program hosts Senior Night on Friday as the team wraps up its 2024 slate against UVA Wise.

 

Narrow vs. Newberry

- The blue and white engaged in a back-and-forth clash with Newberry on Tuesday, but ultimately fell in the fifth set

- Catawba never trailed in the first and third sets, getting out to large leads in both stanzas

- Sofia Beard blasted a team-high 17 kills as Lauren Bodell mashed 11 in a consistent .179 night

- Haley Moffett tallied 42 assists while Riley Hill and Kary Hales topped the digs category with 22 and 15, respectively

- Bodell elevated for four block assists, followed by Sydney Wattles with three

 

Leading the Way

- Beard has climbed team standings in recent weeks, bumping her per-set kills average to 2.41 with a total mark of 118

- Kelcie Love holds a sizeable lead on offense with 179 darts on a .116 hitting percentage while recording 47 digs and 16 blocks

- Blocking-wise, Katie Clark has logged 50 stops as Wattles' 35 puts the two nearly even in per-set average

- Hill leads in both service aces (23) and digs (389) in addition to ranking third on the team at 77 assists

- The top distributor title has been applied to Moffett whose 420 dimes (5.92 per stanza) is accompanied by 141 digs, 21 kills, and seven blocks as her role has greatly expanded

 

All-Time Series

- Catawba is a perfect 5-0 when facing the Highland Cavaliers

- Only one of the five matches were played in Salisbury, the Oct. 18, 2019 contest when Catawba hit .434 (the last .400+ performance) in a forceful 3-0 victory

- The blue and white have outscored UVA Wise 15-3, sweeping the first two meetings in 2019 before notching 3-1 triumphs in the last three seasons

- The foes met in the 2023 regular-season finale when Danielson, Rehm, and Love delivered 10 kills apiece to put away the Highland Cavaliers in four sets

 

Scouting the Highland Cavaliers

- UVA Wise needs a win to secure a South Atlantic Conference postseason berth, currently sitting 10th at 5-12 in the league and 11-15 overall

- The Cavs have struggled away from home, managing a 1-8 record with their lone win in an early-season tournament at Saint Leo

- Kaylee Scarce leads the attack with 261 kills (averaging 3.03 per set) as Riley Brandon follows at 224 strikes

- Cassidy Farley is pacing the SAC with 1.32 blocks per set, totaling 121 stops including 29 solos
