
Women's Volleyball turned away by Saints
GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Catawba College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat on the road against the Limestone Saints on Saturday.
TEAM STATS
- The Saints (6-12, 5-10 SAC) logged a .299 hitting percentage while Catawba (3-17, 1-12 SAC) was held to its least productive day of the year, hitting -.031
- Catawba committed two miscues on service compared to Limestone's six, leading percentage-wise at .951-.918
- The blue and white were out-blocked 12-4 and out-dug 61-46
- Limestone recorded a sideout percentage of 73 percent while restraining Catawba to a 38 percent success rate
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Sofia Beard paced all Catawba hitters with eight kills as Kelcie Love and Sydney Wattles tallied four and three, respectively
- Katie Clark took credit for all four of the squad's blocks, becoming the first Catawba player to tally four solo blocks in a match this season
- Haley Moffett contributed 16 assists to go with eight digs, while Riley Hill collected 16 digs and two helpers
- Kary Hales was errorless in a team-high 19 receptions, adding five digs and an assist
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- Led by Mariya Montgomery and Josie Curran, Limestone sprinted out of the gate with six straight points
- Catawba picked away at the deficit with help from Saint miscues as Lillie Kate Rogers' second kill cut the Limestone lead to 11-9
- The hosts regained control and ripped off eight points in a row featuring three kills by Mia McMillen, but consecutive errors halted the run
- Jana Price logged a kill before a Montgomery block and set-ending Curran blast locked up the frame at 25-12
Second Set
- Clark and Wattles turned in sideout kills early in the second set, preventing the Saints from running away again
- A big block from Clark narrowed the score to 9-6, but miscues riddled the blue and white who the deficit grow to eight
- Beard and Lauren Bodell powered Catawba in a comeback effort, going toe-to-toe with McMillen who notched four kills in a seven-rally span
- Up 22-12, Limestone initiated back-and-forth play with plenty of insurance to reach 25 points
Third Set
- Wearers of jersey No. 1, Limestone's McMillen and Catawba's Beard, had the final attacks on 10 of the set's first 11 points as the Saints had the upper hand, gaining a 7-4 edge
- A Beard kill and two darts from Love kept the Catawba Indians' hopes alive while trailing by five
- However, Limestone went on a 10-1 run highlighted by Curran kills and errant Catawba touches
- Jana Price got the Saints to match point with a kill, then worked around a Beard blast to provide the deciding point and secure the sweep
