
Women's Volleyball falls victim to rolling Carson-Newman squad
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Catawba College women's volleyball team conceded its South Atlantic Conference matchup to the Carson-Newman Eagles, 3-0, on Tuesday evening at Holt Fieldhouse.
TEAM STATS
- The Eagles (10-3, 6-0 SAC) landed 34 kills with a .238 hitting percentage compared to Catawba (1-9, 0-4 SAC) who amassed 28 with a hitting clip of .038
- The Catawba Indians also gained fewer points via blocks (5-2) and service aces (12-2)
- All of Catawba's kills were assisted while Carson-Newman had three kills go down without a dime
- The blue and white finished with a 46-44 advantage in the digs department with 11 players contributing at least one
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Devyn Berg, chalking up a new season high, and Jordan Danielson keyed the offense by supplying seven kills apiece
- Lauren Bodell and Annica Kagle logged season-best performances in the kill category with three and two, respectively
- Sydney McCutcheon tallied 14 assists as fellow setter Haley Moffett recorded a career-high 10 helpers
- Riley Hill accounted for 16 of the Catawba Indians' 46 digs while notching the squad's two service aces
- Danielson, Katie Clark, Natalie Rehm, and Kagle – for the first time in her career – each tacked on a block assist
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- Danielson pounded the first kill of the match as Sofia Beard and Bodell also tacked on points in the early going
- Three consecutive C-N aces by Bennett McCombs provoked a Catawba timeout that proved to be helpful as the visitors reduced a six-point gap to 11-8
- Berg chalked up her first kill before the Eagles took flight with nine points in a row to reach 23-10
- Danielson and Rachel Gonzales found paydirt to hinder the C-N charge, but Annie Dziczkowski provided the final point for a 25-11 decision
Second Set
- A service miscue by C-N and an ace by Hill to start the stanza got Catawba in front 2-0
- Unlucky hits prevented Catawba from keeping the lead but the sides remained separated by just one or two points
- The Eagles developed 13-9 lead, its largest of the period, until Sydney Wattles and Danielson powered kills followed by a Hill ace brought Catawba back within a point
- Despite a pair of kills by Gonzales, Catawba struggled to usurp C-N and ultimately fell 25-17
Third Set
- Successful spikes from Danielson snapped an initial 3-0 Eagle edge as Catawba had the lead in its sight at 7-5
- Small runs helped C-N gradually develop a larger advantage of 15-10
- One kill by Rehm, two from Kagle, an another out of Gonzales reeled Catawba to a narrow 16-15 deficit
- The Eagles navigated around a pair of Berg kills to rattle off a 9-2 run, seal the match with a 25-17 win in the last set
