
Women's Volleyball storms back for thrilling five-set win over Newberry
Salisbury, N.C. —- After dropping the first two sets Tuesday night, the Catawba College Women's Volleyball team stormed back for the five-set win over Newberry inside Goodman Arena in South Atlantic Conference action.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba had 51 kills to Newberry's 41
- The Catawba Indians hit .089; Newberry hit .086
- Catawba recorded 49 assists to the Wolves' 39
- The Catawba Indians racked up 11 service aces on the night, while Newberry had six
- Catawba held a slight advantage in digs 73-72
- The Catawba Indians had 20 blocks to Newberry's 15
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Katrina Misra matched a game-high with 13 kills on 34 swings, while adding six digs
- Jordan Danielson was the other Catawba player with double-digit kills with 12
- Chloe Danielson added eight kills
- Siena Roethler recorded 24 assists, while Mya Benfield had 18 assists and 13 digs to go along with four service aces
- Kary Hales recorded a team-high 15 digs, while Riley Chill chipped in 12
- Katie Clark and Natalie Rehm each recorded five blocks
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Newberry rolled to a set one win, hitting .241, the best of either team in a set on the night
- The Wolves recorded six of seven points to turn a tie 6-6 set into a 12-7 lead halfway through
- Newberry led by as much as 20-11 before trading points until the end of the set
SECOND SET
- Catawba rattled off four consecutive points early to take a 6-2 lead in set two
- The Wolves chipped away at the deficit, but did not lead until a Catawba attack error made it 19-18 for Newberry
- Catawba tied the set at 19 before the Wolves recorded four straight points to take a 23-19 lead
- Newberry saw their lead cut in half to 24-22 before clinching the second set
THIRD SET
- Newberry looked in control to start the third set, recording the first six points of the frame
- Catawba recorded five straight points of their own just minutes later to tie the game at 6
- The Wolves responded with another run, scoring seven of nine points to take a 15-8 lead in the potential match-clinching set
- Four straight Catawba points forced a Newberry timeout, as the visitors still held to a 15-12 lead
- A 7-1 run for the Catawba Indians turned a 20-16 deficit to a 23-21 lead before closing out the set to avoid the sweep
FOURTH SET
- After Newberry got off to a 2-0 lead, Catawba rattled off nine points in a row on Hill's serve to force a Newberry timeout
- The Wolves weren't done there, though, scoring eight of 10 points to cut the deficit to just 11-10
- Newberry tied the set at 15, but never led as Catawba once again utilized a 7-1 run to take a 22-16 advantage
- The Wolves cut their deficit in half with three straight points, but Catawba shut the door with three straight points to force a decisive fifth set
FIFTH SET
- Newberry jumped out to 2-0 and 4-2 leads, but Catawba kept the momentum going with another 7-1 run to take a 9-5 lead
- The Catawba Indians largely cruised the rest of the way, taking the final set 15-8 and earning their first conference victory of the season
