Catawba Track and Field open season at JDL Early Bird Invitational and Boston Sharon Colyear-Danville
Winston-Salem, NC and Boston, MA – The Catawba Track and Field program opened the 2023-24 season by competing at the JDL Early Bird Invitational and Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Catawba took home three first place finishes in events and had an overall 16 athletes secure Top-10 finishes in events. The team combined for 6 top 20 NCAA provisional marks.
Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener
Madi Clay and Mikayla Jones both competed for the Catawba women in the 5K event held on the campus of Boston University both notching NCAA provisional times in the event. Clay finished wit a time of 16:52 setting a new school record. Jones ran a time of 17:15 for her new personal best.
JDL Early Bird Invitational
Barja Walter had a big day to open his senior year campaign on the men's side. He won the men's 200m with a time of 22.06 and finished second in the 60m run with a finish time of 6.82 in the event. Teammate Winfred Porter won the 60m event claiming the win with a time of 6.76 setting a new school record and the seventh best time in the nation this year.
Joining Walter in the 200m event was Brendan Henby (5th 22.72), Winfred Porter (8th 22.78), and Justin Glaze (10th 22.86) for four top ten finishers in the event.
Freshman Seth Caudill is off to a fast start in his collegiate career taking home the crown in the men's mile setting a new meet record with a finish of 4:18.97.
Efemena Egberi earned two fifth-place finishes on the day to highlight the women's team outing. In the women's 60m, she ran a time of 7.75 and jumped a mark of 5.16m in the women's long jump competition.
On the men's side of the long jump event, Javier Gomez-Wilson secured a second place finish with a jump of 6.97m. In the triple jump competition, Wilson jumped 13.77m to claim sixth place. Teammate Chris Brown finished eighth in the event jumping 13.70m.
Continuing the success for the Catawba men in the field events was Namaurion Koontz who finished seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.90m.
Onii Bivens claimed third in the women's 400m with a finish of 59.52 for a new indoor personal record.
In the men's 400m, Tyler Johnson secured a fourth place finish with a time of 51.06 while teammate Justin Galze saw an eleventh place finish running 51.97 in the event.
John Shearin IV claimed seventh place in the 60m men's hurdles 9.09

Catawba Track and Field programs will not be back in action until after the new year. They will compete at the VMI Team Challenge on January 20th.
