
Track and Field begins the outdoor season at 49er Classic
Charlotte, N.C. —- The Catawba Track and Field outdoor teams kicked off the outdoor season competing at the 49er Classic hosted by UNCC. The team is off to a great start on the season with ten Top 5 event finishes, one event winner, and two NCAA marks.
Everette Rhymer secured the first-place finish Saturday in the men's 800m and an NCAA qualifying mark with a time of 1:51.22.
Carmen Bishop had a strong weekend finishing fifth in the women's javelin and with a personal best of 37.41 on Saturday. To get the weekend started Bishop set the school record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.62 on Friday.
The women's 4x100 team finished fourth with a time of 47.70. They were just seconds off the school record.
Junior Raina Andrews set the school record with a time of 2:15.05 in the women's 800m event. She finished in seventh place.
Onii Bivens, Gianna Gutierrez, Skylar Payne, and Kierra Jones represented Catawba in the women's 4x400 and placed top 5 with a time of 3:58.34.
An NCAA qualifying mark was met in the men's 100m when Barja Walter finished in third place with a time of 10.52.
Teammates Raina Andrews and Natalie Almond broke the school record in the women's 1500m. Andrews with a time of 4:39.35 and Almond with a time of 4:43.26. They finished fifth and tenth respectively.
In the women's 5K Catawba sophomore Mikayla Jones finished third and set the school record with a time of 17:36.28.
MeKayla White had a runner-up performance in the women's long jump with a jump of 5.70m(18-8.5).
On the men's side junior Antonio Howard finished fourth with a jump of 7.05m(23-1.75).

Both teams will be back in action March 23-25 at the NC State Relays.
