#22 Women’s Tennis seeded 6th in Southeast Regional, first NCAA berth since 2002
Indianapolis, Ind. —- The 22nd-ranked Catawba College women's tennis team was seeded sixth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Monday evening, the NCAA announced. The South Atlantic Conference Tournament champion Catawba Indians will face 3rd-seeded Wingate in a rematch of the SAC title match on Friday, May 10 at 2 p.m. in St. Augustine, Fla. on the campus of Flagler College.
Catawba, under the direction of second-year head coach Mic Moore, has made a remarkable turnaround in the past two years, returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002 after receiving the SAC's automatic bid after upending the 6th-ranked Bulldogs for the program's first-ever SAC tournament title. The team also sits at the highest national ranking in program history.
The team is led by First Team All-SAC singles player and SAC Tournament MVP Ami Miya, who enters the NCAA Tournament with a 20-9 record in singles play overall on the season and a winner of her last six, including a win over Wingate's top-20 nationally ranked Chloe to clinch the SAC title point.
Anna Wise, Isidora Zivkovic, Mati Moretti, Nika Dundovic, Rin Igarashi, Sofia Hernandez Mera, Tina Gomes, Vaishnavi Venkatesh and Veronika Poliakova round out Catawba's regulars who will look for their first NCAA Tournament victory since defeating Pfeiffer in the opening round of the 2001 Southeast regional.
