
Women's Tennis earns sweep in home opener
Salisbury, N.C. —- Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College Women's Tennis team made their home season debut on Saturday, picking up a pair of victories as they first swept the Emory & Henry Wasps 7-0 before later adding a 4-1 victory over the Mount Olive Trojans at the Catawba Tennis Courts to climb to 6-1 now on the season

HOW IT HAPPENED
- All three Catawba pairings were dominant in Doubles action. Both the No. 1 court tandem of Rin Igarashi and Ami Miya and the No. 2 court pairing of Veronika Poliakova and Sofia Hernandez Mera swept their matchups 6-0. Igarashi and Miya would take down Emma Charlton and Natalie Bergmann, while Poliakova and Hernandez Mera defeated Nina Williams and Kate Bradley
- On the No. 3 court, Tina Gomes and Nika Dundovicrolled to a 6-1 victory over Sabina Chemega and Karlie Quinn, with Catawba tandems racking up a 12-1 ledger en route to earning the Doubles' point
- Miya got Catawba started in Singles action with a dominant performance from the No. 1 position as she took down Chemega in two sets, 6-1 and 6-0
- Isidora Zivkovic defeated Charlton on the No. 2 court, clinching the win with a stellar 6-0 second set after just eking out a 7-6 win the first frame
- Poliakova clinched the win for Catawba as she took care of business from the No. 3 position, downing Bergmann 6-0 and 6-2 in a two-set triumph
- Vaishnavi Ventakesh took down Williams on the No. 4 court by a score of 8-1
- Hernandez Mera took the win over Bradley over two sets in the No. 5 position, earning a pair of 6-2 wins
- Igarashi delivered the sweep for Catawba with an 8-1 defeat of Quinn on the No. 6 court
MATCH TWO / Catawba 4, Mount Olive 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Catawba would earn the Doubles point by taking two of the three matches, beginning with Miya and Igarashi defeating Valeria Guerrero and Jessica Aylward on the No. 1 court, 6-4
- Poliakova and Hernandez Mera joined Miya and Igarashi in winning both of their doubles matches on the day, as the pair took down Simone Szovan and Victoria Calle 6-3 in the No. 2 position to give Catawba the Doubles point
- Miya completed a 4-0 showing on the day in combined Singles and Doubles play by taking down Stamerellers on Court No. 1 with a pair of 6-3 victories to begin Singles action with another Catawba point
- Matilde Moretti was edged out by Guerrero in two sets on Court No. 2, 2-6 and 6-7
- Zivkovic picked her up second Singles win on the day, putting Catawba ahead 3-1 by knocking Calle with a pair of 6-2 victories from the No. 3 position
- Hernandez Mera joined Miya in going a combined 4-0 on the day in Singles and Doubles action as she defeated Aylward on Court No. 6, 6-4 and 6-3, for the final score of 4-1, Catawba
