
Tennis sweeps past UVA Wise to open up SAC play
Wise, Va. —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams opened up South Atlantic Conference play with a sweep on Sunday afternoon, in a match that was played to clinch due to a delay.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ami Miya and Rin Igarashi raced out to a 6-0 lead in #1 doubles
- Sofia Hernandez Mera and Veronika Poliakova clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 win of their own
- Miya added a 6-0, 6-1 win in #1 singles, Matilde Moretti added a 6-4, 6-4 win and Hernandez Mera made it a 4-0 clean sweep to clinch the victory for the women with a 6-1, 6-3 win
- On the men's side, Edoardo Cecere and Ryan Little started it off with a 6-4 win, while Tyler Juergens and Paul Dekester backed it up with a 6-4 win of their own; Taketoshi Nanao and Sebastian Zabala made it a clean sweep on the doubles side for Catawba with a 7-5 win
- Cecere took home a win in #1 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win
- Alessandro Valleta won his first match as a Catawba Indian with a 6-2, 7-5 win in #4 singles, Marko Sudar won a dramatic #5 singles match 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 and Nanao finished off the win with a 6-2, 7-5 win in #6 singles
