
#37 Women’s Tennis advances to first SAC semis since 2006 in win over #31 Anderson
Sumter, S.C. —- The 37th-ranked and five-seed Catawba College women's tennis team earned their first win in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament since 2006, advancing to Friday's SAC semis after a 4-3 win over 31st-ranked and four-seed Anderson. The Catawba Indians improve to 14-6 on the season, while the Trojans drop to 15-5 on the year.
Catawba won two of three doubles matches to earn a crucial point in the match. Ami Miya and Alexandra Parra won their #1 doubles match 6-4 and Carolina Correia and Sofia Hernandez followed suit with a 6-4 win in #2 doubles to win the point.
The Catawba Indians split the six singles matches to earn the quarterfinal victory. Miya came from behind to take the #1 singles match 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, Matilde Moretti earned a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win in the #2s match and Vaishnavi Venkatesh came from behind 0-6 in set one to earn an 0-6, 7-6, 6-3 win in #4 singles to advance Catawba to the conference semifinals.
All six singles matches went the full three sets with four matches going to a tiebreak in at least one set.
Catawba advanced to Friday's SAC semifinal round, facing 18th-ranked and top seed Tusculum at 9 a.m.
