
Tennis completes regular season with split at Belmont Abbey
Belmont, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams concluded their 2023 regular season at Belmont Abbey on Saturday in non-conference tennis action. The Catawba women swept their way to a 7-0 win over the Crusaders, improving to 13-6 overall, while the men fell 5-2, ending their season at 6-14 overall.
The Catawba women won all three doubles matches to earn the point. Miya Ami and Alexandra Parra won their #1 doubles match 6-0, Sofia Hernandez and Carolina Correia won 6-2 in #2 doubles and Nika Dundovic and Tina Gomes defeated their #3 doubles opponent 6-1.
The women also won all six singles matches, as Miya took home a 6-2, 6-1 win in #1 singles, Vaishnavi Venkatesh won 6-3, 6-3 in #2 singles, Correia earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in #3 singles, Hernandez defeated her #4 singles opponent 6-2, 7-5, Veronika Poliakova won 6-0, 6-1 in #5 singles and Vicky Beardsley made it a clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win in #6s.
The Catawba men were swept in the doubles matches and won two singles matches.
Marcos Castares picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win in #1 singles and Paul Dekester earned a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win in #3s.
The Catawba men wrap up their season, but the women continue on with action in the South Atlantic Conference tournament starting next week in Sumter, S.C.
