#13 Women’s Soccer wraps up 2-0 opening weekend with strong second half over GCSU

Salisbury, N.C. —- The 13th-ranked Catawba College women's soccer team capped a 2-0 weekend at Frock Field on Sunday afternoon, netting two second-half goals to pull away from Georgia College in non-conference play.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-shot Georgia College 15-6

- The Catawba Indians had six shots on goal to just two for the Bobcats

- Catawba recorded nine corner kicks to GCSU's two

- Georgia College had 10 fouls and three yellow cards compared to three Catawba fouls and no yellow cards

- The Catawba Indians had all four offside calls on the afternoon

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Morgan Delair netted the game-winner in the 65th minute

- Kelly Havens scored her second goal of the young season to add insurance later in the second half

- Kylie Morin did the same, adding a second goal in as many games with a first-half goal

- Bree Ehmer, Maria Rayburn and Lillie Rusher dished out assists on the scores

- Ashley Hughes improved to 2-0 on the year in goal, making one save

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Callie Hammond threatened early with a shot that hit the crossbar in the fourth minute

- Ella Matthews put a shot on target in the tenth minute, but the GCSU keeper made the stop

- Rayburn found the feet of Morin, who deposited a goal in the bottom-left corner in the 26th minute, as Catawba took the early lead

- The Bobcats threatened about five minutes later, but Hughes picked up the save on a GCSU shot on target

- Georgia College's Amanda Dewey followed up a blocked shot from Sara Schultz to even up the score in the 41st minute

 

SECOND HALF

- Catawba began to add pressure in the early second half, as Delair and Matthews both tested GCSU's keeper with on-target shots

- Ehemer played ahead to Delair, who fired an upper-left strike for what proved to be the winner in the 65th minute of action

- A foul just outside the box allowed Catawba to score on a set piece, as Rusher found the head of Havens for an insurance score

- The Catawba Indians kept the visitors shotless for the remaining 12 minutes, as Catawba earned their second win of the weekend

- Catawba takes the lead in the all-time series over Georgia College, 3-2

- The Catawba Indians avenge a loss at GCSU a year ago as the top-ranked team in the country
