
#4 Women’s Soccer’s nation-leading offense rolls again in 7-0 win in SAC opener
Salisbury, N.C. —- The 4th-ranked Catawba women's soccer team piled on five first-half goals en route to a 7-0 win over Newberry in their South Atlantic Conference opener at Frock Field on Wednesday night.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba out-shot Newberry 36-4
- The Catawba Indians held the advantage in shots on goal 15-1
- Catawba recorded nine of 10 corner kicks on the evening
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Hannah Dunn scored a pair of goals included the game-winner and added an assist
- Sydney Jimmo added to her nation-leading goal-scoring total with two more goals and an assist
- Lillie Rusher, Ali Skinner and Lydia Jonsson also netted goals for Catawba
- Morgan Delair, Helen Summerell, Madison Henry, Zoey Conrad and Emy Cloutier notched assists on the night
- Ashley Hughes earned the win in goal, making one save in the first half before Maddie Grubb kept the shutout intact in the second half
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- Catawba got a penalty kick in the seventh minute, but the try was saved by Newberry
- Summerell's shot in the 11th minute hit the crossbar, but Dunn followed it up with a score on the rebound in what was eventually the game-winner
- Hughes made her lone save of the evening in the 14th minute
- Rusher scored on a long free kick in the 18th minute
- Dunn netted a goal less than a minute later off feeds from Henry and Jimmo
- Jimmo capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity in the 25th minute
- Conrad found Skinner for the header goal in the 42nd minute to give Catawba a 5-0 cushion at the brek
SECOND HALF
- Jimmo scored on assist from Dunn and Delair less than five minutes into the second half
- Jonsson netted her first-career goal in the 82nd minute
GAME NOTES
- Catawba's 30 goals and six goals per game both ranked first in the nation
- Jimmo's eight goals also top the nation's leaders
- Catawba is out-scoring unranked opponents 24-0 this season
- First game in program history ranked as a top-5 team
- Dunn's 37th and 38th career goals; Jimmo's 30th and 31st career goals; Rusher's fifth career goal; first-career goals for Skinner and Jonsson
- Dunn, Jimmo and Summerell now rank fifth, tied for sixth and eighth in program history in goals scored
- Catawba is 70-15-9 with 55 shutouts since the start of the 2018 season
