Women's Soccer Plays Wingate to a Scoreless Draw

SALISBURY, N.C. – The No. 9 Catawba College women's soccer team played to their first draw of the season with the Wingate Bulldogs at the Frock Soccer Complex on Wednesday night. Despite sending out 14 shots to Wingate's two, the game ended 0-0.

Coming into Wednesday's match, both Catawba and Wingate were among the top-four teams in the conference in defensive statistics like goals allowed and goals against average. The stage was set for a defensive struggle, and that's how the midweek SAC matchup played out.

Catawba and junior midfielder Sydney Jimmo put the pressure on in the early stages when Jimmo sent a shot towards the net just seven minutes in, but her shot sailed high over the woodwork.

Jimmo had five of Catawba's nine shots in the first half, but neither team had a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

As the game moved to the second half, the intensity picked up. Helen Summerell got Catawba's first shot on goal just two minutes into the second 45, but it was saved by Wingate's keeper.

Catawba's best chance of the day came on a corner kick in the 60th minute. Kelly Havens was able to get the first touch as the ball came into the box, and she sent a shot towards the open net. At the last moment, a Wingate defender stepped in front of the shot attempt to keep Catawba off the board.

A minute later, goalkeeper Sierra Davis made a save on a Bulldog's shot to keep the clean sheet.

The last shot on goal of the game came in the 64th minute when Sydney Jimmo launched a free kick on net, but it came up short and the keeper corralled it for the save.

Both teams ended in a scoreless draw as Catawba moved to 8-0-1 on the season.

The women's soccer team will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Tusculum for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
