SALISBURY, N.C. – The No. 9 Catawba College women's soccer team broke the single-game scoring record after defeating the Bluefield State Big Blue 13-0 on Friday afternoon. A total of twelve different players scored in the match led by Sydney Jimmo who had two on the day.
Coming off the heels of their last game where the Catawba women's soccer team only scored one goal against Chowan, Catawba erupted in a big way on Friday. The home team sent out 40 total shots en route to making history with 13 goals in the game.
By the 22nd minute, the home team held a 5-0 lead and got goals from four different players. Leading scorer, Hannah Dunn, broke the floodgates just six minutes in with a score, then Helen Summerell charged through the defense for a goal four minutes later. In the 18th minute, Sydney Jimmo finished on passes from Kasey Hahn and Summerell in the box to make it 3-0, and she also scored at the 20:32 mark.
Graduate transfer Karen Juarez returned from injury and immediately got herself in the stat sheet. Juarez scored a minute and 21 seconds after Jimmo to put Catawba in front 5-0.
Right before halftime, McKenzee Johnson ripped a shot from near midfield, and it slipped under the leg of the goalkeeper to give the Catawba Indians a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime.
The scoring was nowhere near complete as the Catawba Indians notched seven more scores in the second half. Captain Katie Beck found herself on the front line to start the second stanza as she sent a shot towards the net that hit off a defender's hand awarding her a penalty kick. The senior buried it for her first goal of the season.
In the last 30 minutes, five different players also scored their first goals of the season. Freshmen Morgan Delair and Kara Simons got their first collegiate goals of their career while Acacia Rodriguez, Callie Hammond, and Logan Howard notched their first goals of the 2022 season. Lillie Rusher also notched a goal in the contest which was her third for the season.
The 13 goals scored by the ninth-ranked Catawba Indians was the most ever in program history breaking the previous mark of 12 goals scored by the 2004 women's soccer team against Newberry.
The women's soccer team will be back in action next Wednesday to face Wingate at Frock Field starting at 5:00 p.m.
