Hannah Dunn Scores Four Goals In 7-0 Rout Over Emory & Henry
SALISBURY, N.C. – The No. 10 ranked Catawba Women's Soccer team's scorching run of form continued Wednesday night as they steamrolled visiting Emory & Henry, with Hannah Dunn scoring four of seven goals in front of a red-out crowd on Fan Appreciation Night at the Frock Soccer Complex.
Catawba (5 - 0) continued their phenomenal run of offensive form, outshooting Emory & Henry (1 - 2) by a staggering 35-1 margin and controlling possession and play from the opening kickoff right to the end of the 90 minutes. Sierra Davis, who played the first half in net, and Allison Fredrick, who took over after halftime, had little to do in net as Catawba recorded their second straight shutout with the help of a stifling press and another excellent defensive performance.
The Catawba Indians got off the mark right off the gate, as Dunn grabbed her first goal in the fifth minute , bursting into the box to allow Helen Summerell to tee her up from close range. The dynamic duo struck again just a few minutes later as Summerell would again be the provider with a low cross following a driving run into the box, and Dunn made no mistake to slot home from close range.
Catawba's prolific No. 19 would complete her hat trick just past the half hour mark, on nearly identical play to her second. Lillie Rusher drove down the left wing and fired a low cross towards the center, with Dunn beating her defender to it and sending Wasps keeper Natalie Capone the wrong way. Taking a 3-0 lead into the half, The Lady Indians refused to take their foot off the gas, as Dunn notched her fourth goal by following up on a loose ball in the box after seeing a shot turned away by Capone in the 48th minute.
Helen Summerell took the scoring baton just moments later in the 50th minute as she finished off Katie Webb's cross after Webb cruised down the left flank and fired in a low ball almost unopposed that Summerell tapped into an open net. Crosses continued to be Catawba's strength as Kelly Havens notched a goal following a scramble in the box after a corner, being the first to react and firing past Capone.
Catawba's final goal came courtesy of Lillie Rusher, and it was generated in the same way as most of Catawba's big chances and goals. Ayden Vaughn got free on the wing and danced her way into the box, before putting a cross on a plate for Rusher to simply tap into the net for Catawba's seventh and final goal, their new single game high for this season.
For Emory & Henry, their lone shot came on an attempt in the first half from Helen Frazier. Goalie Natalie Capone was impressive in the face of the Catawba onslaught, recording 13 saves.
Catawba will look to keep their undefeated start to season rolling when they return to action on Saturday, September 10th as they travel to South Carolina to take on Newberry at 4:30PM at Setzler Field.
