Sorvillo records hat trick in Women's Lacrosse home opener

Salisbury, N.C. – The Catawba College women's lacrosse team was unable to hold off the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at Shuford Stadium on Saturday, falling in their home opener by a final score of 19-7. 

 

TEAM STATS 

- Belmont Abbey out-shot Catawba 37-28, with 30 of the Crusaders' shots coming on target to 22 of Catawba's attempts. Belmont Abbey converted four of six free position shots, while Catawba was two of nine 

- Both teams controlled 14 draws, while Belmont Abbey was successful on 25-32 clears to Catawba's mark of 17-24 

- Both teams compiled similar marks defensively; Catawba forced one more turnover, 25-24, while Belmont Abbey recovered more ground balls, 24-22 

- Belmont Abbey's Summer Eddinger saved 15 shots en route to the win, improving 1-1 on the season. For Catawba, Evie Kaserud made 11 saves but dropped to 0-2.  

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS 

 - Five Catawba players put themselves on the scoresheet, led by Mary Sorvillo with a hat trick. Michaela Lantz, Joey Baillie, Sarah Maier, and Caroline Cox all found the back of the net with a goal each 

 - Sorvillo attempted seven shots, putting six on target for Catawba. Baillie put all four of her efforts on goal 

 - Kaserud, Sorvillo, and Ella McCusker all tallied four ground balls to tie for team-high, while Audrey Adelsberger nearly matched that mark with three of her own  

 - Baillie, Helena Cronemiller, and Jenna Hirvonen each caused a pair of turnovers to tie for the team-high as well 

 - Hirvonen and Mackenzie Mullan each controlled three draws for Catawba  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

FIRST QUARTER 

- Abbey McCarthy opened the scoring by putting Belmont Abbey up at the 12:46 mark, but it wouldn't stand long as Cox found the equalizer at 11:18. Sorvillo gave Catawba the lead just :34 seconds later with her first goal 

- That would prove to be Catawba's only lead of the game, as a 3-0 Belmont Abbey run would put the Crusaders up  4-2 after the first 15 minutes

 

SECOND QUARTER 

- Katelyn Miller made it 5-2 to Belmont Abbey with 13:38 to go in the half, and while Sorvillo would answer at 9:48, the Crusaders would rip off a 3-0 run led by a pair of goals from Hailey Carroll to go up 8-3 

- Maier found the back of the net for Catawba with 7:17 left in the quarter, bringing to Catawba back to within four 

 

THIRD QUARTER 

- Belmont Abbey would surge ahead in a decisive third period, blanking Catawba for 14 minutes while rattling off a 4-0 run led by Miller and McCarthy to go ahead 13-4 

- Catawba wasn't out of the game just yet however, pulling two goals back in the final minute of the period. Hirvonen assisted a goal from Lantz with :47 left, before Sorvillo completed her hat-trick with :03 seconds left to make it 13-6  

 

FOURTH QUARTER 

- There was a flurry of goals to open the final 15:00, with the Crusaders responding to the pair of Catawba goals to end the third period with a pair of their own in the first two minutes. Baillie notched a goal with 12:06 to go, making it 15-7 

- There would over seven scoreless minutes as Catawba fought to make a comeback, but to no avail. Four late goals from Belmont Abbey sealed the game, with the final score 19-7 in favor of the Crusaders

- Catawba hits the road for their next game on Thursday, Feb. 15, heading to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Converse at 6 p.m.
