
Baillie’s career day lifts Women’s Lacrosse to first SAC win over Coker
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College utilized a five-goal performance from sophomore midfielder Joey Baillie to the team's first win in South Atlantic Conference play this season over Coker, 13-7, Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the SAC, while the Cobras drop to 1-8 and 0-4 in league play.
Baillie led the way for Catawba offensively, scoring five goals on six shots along with three ground balls and six draw controls. Kylie Harris added three goals, while Mary Sorvillo and Ella McCusker were Catawba's two other multi-goal scorers with two apiece. Erin Young and Rebecca Salber recorded four ground balls apiece. Coker's Hailey Morgan led the Cobras with three goals and two assists.
Catawba scored the game's opening two goals, as Harris' man-down goal put up Catawba 2-0 at the 7:08 mark. Coker got on the board less than a minute later to cut their deficit in half. Baillie and Harris each scored again to wrap up the first period, leading 4-1 after 15 minutes.
The Cobras recorded the first three goals of the third quarter, tying the game at 4 on Abby Gross' goal at the 12:43 mark. Catawba responded with three straight goals the rest of the way, as Helena Cronemiller scored between two McCusker goals, giving Catawba a 7-4 lead at the halftime break.
Coker scored back-to-back to cut their deficit to one out of the second half, but Baillie went on a personal 3-0 run in less than three minutes to extend the lead back to 10-6. Coker scored for the final time at the 1:17 mark of the third quarter. Catawba scored each of the three goals in the fourth quarter, earning their first conference win of the year.
Catawba hits the road on Saturday, traveling to Tusculum for a 4 p.m. start.
