Women’s Lacrosse falls in SAC home opener to #12 Wingate

Four Catawba student-athletes recorded one goal apiece, while Erin Young added five ground balls and Caroline Cox had three draw controls. Becca Ruiz led the Bulldogs with five goals and Paige Kamer tallied eight assists.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first four minutes before Bella Pellet scored the game's opening goal Wingate at the 10:46 mark. Mary Sorvillo responded with a free-position goal to tie the game at 1 less than a minute later. Wingate scored the first half's final 11 goals, leading 12-1 at the break.

Catawba scored three of the first four goals of the second half, as Cox opened the scoring in the final 30 minutes 90 seconds into the half. Young and Sarah Maier added back-to-back scores to cut the Catawba deficit to 13-4. The Catawba Indians out-scored Wingate 3-2 in the quarter.

The Bulldogs scored each of the six goals in the fourth quarter to reach the 20-goal mark.

Catawba continues SAC play on Saturday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 4 p.m. start.
