
Women's Golf takes down #18 Grand Valley State in opening match at The Bracket Challenge
Homer, Ga. – The Catawba College Women's Golf team competed in a double-action over two rounds at the UNG Women's Bracket Challenge on Monday, entering as the No. 6 seed in the field. Playing at the Chimney Oaks Golf Club, Catawba pulled a huge upset over the No. 3 seeded Grand Valley State Lakers in the Quarterfinals before falling to 15th-ranked Lee University Flames in the Semifinals

Match No. 1: Julia Sanchez def.Mary-Paige King, 73-80
King would post a +8, 80 score in the opening round as she fell to Sanchez's mark of +1, 73 in the first match. While she endured a tough opening stretch with a +6, 42 over the front-nine, King posted a strong +2, 38 over the back stretch thanks to a birdie and five pars as she looked to rally

Match No. 2: Chloe Crane def. Rachael Krieger, 75-77
Crane earned Catawba's first point of the day with a strong +3, 75 showing in her opening matchup that featured three birdies and 11 pars. Crane would notch a +1, 37 over the front-nine by holing a birdie and six pars to start strong; while she would be tripped up by a triple bogey on the 10th hole, she remained steady to sink two more birdies and another five pars for a +2, 38 over the back-nine

Match No. 3: Maddy Vogan def. Megan Miron, 77-83
Vogan would put Catawba ahead 2-1 with a solid +5, 77 outing to begin the day as she knocked off Miron and her score of +11, 83. Vogan potted a birdie and four pars over the opening frame for a +3, 39 before tallying another birdie and five more pars during the back-nine as part of a +2, 38 stretch

Match No. 4: Emily Wellspeak def. Paula Badino, 72-75
Wellspeak was in terrific form as she clinched Catawba's third point and the win, posting an E, 72 ledger that would tie her for the fourth-best among all players in the opening round. Wellspeak put together an excellent front-nine, sinking two birdies and six pars for a -1, 35 over that stretch. While she'd join King in falling victim to a triple bogey on the 10th hole, Wellspeak also remained focused and would hole three birdies down the stretch for a +1, 37 back-nine performance that enabled her to best Badino's mark of +3, 75

Match No. 5: Olivia Stoll def. Lauren Hackler, 70-82
Hackler would post a +10, 82 in the first round, falling to a -2, 70 effort from Stoll that would tied for best over the first 18 holes. She posted a pair of +5, 41 efforts, with a birdie and four pars over the front-nine and a solid seven pars over the back stretch

Hackler would battle to a draw with Lily Bloodworth, with both golfers posting +6, 78 rounds. Hackler posted a strong E, 36 front-nine that featured a pair of birdies and five pars, but was unable to keep the momentum with a +6, 42 back-nine as the two split the point
