Women's Golf posts season-best finish of third at St. Simons Intercollegiate
Saint Simons Island, Ga. – Catawba women's golf concluded the Saint Simons Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon after two excellent rounds of play, notching their highest finish of the season so far by placing third out of 18 teams. Catawba's final mark of 39-over par, 615 was right behind second-place Newberry's +38, 614 result and just five points off of Lincoln Memorial's winning score of +34/610
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Catawba opened play on Monday, posting a +24 and ending the opening round tied with Erskine in third place and setting the tone early
- The second round was where Catawba really rounded into form, shooting a +15 en route to holding firm in third place. That 15-over par mark was the third-best round that any of the 18 teams would post, and the second-best posted in the final round
- Abbie Daquila paced Catawba with a breakout performance, finishing T-7th, +8/152 after an excellent +2 showing in the second round. Daquila was even or better on 11/18 holes in the first round, but suffered from a double bogey on hole 17. She returned to show out in the next 18 holes, shooting even or better on 15/18 of them and only bogeying three times to climb the leaderboard. Daquila would finish with three birdies overall en route to her best finish of the season.
- Mary-Paige King had another solid performance, finishing T-14th at +10/154. Similar to Daquila, she opened round one with a +6 final and climbed on day two with a +4. She was tracking towards a solid front-nine in the first round before a crushing triple bogey, one of just 10/36 holes overall that she wouldn't finish even or better. While King had a double bogey on the second day, she held firm and shot even or better on 14/18 holes.
- Chloe Crane kept pace with King, also finishing T-14th at +10/154. Crane notched +5s in each round, with five birdies overall to tie for the Catawba lead, with three of them coming during the back-nine of round two in a +1 stretch. Crane was even or better on 23/36 holes
- Maddy Vogan would finish T-38th at +15/159, returning on day two to post a solid +4 after a rough +11 opening on Monday. After six even holes and one of her five birdies, a double and triple bogey to close the back-nine would derail her momentum; however, three birdies and a +1 back-nine in the second round would see Vogan recover and rise back up the board
- Emily Wellspeak rounded out the Catawba lineup tied-for 44th at +17/161, posting a +2 front-nine on Monday but suffered from a rough stretch during the end of round one and opening of round two. She'd stabilize herself with a +3 effort during the back-nine of round two
