Women’s Basketball drops late-season tilt at Mars Hill

Mars Hill, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team was held to 35 percent shooting in a 63-54 loss at Mars Hill on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Mars Hill was 19-for-52 (37 percent) from the field, while Catawba went 19-of-54 (35 percent) from the floor

- The Lions were 7-for-16 (44 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians shot 3-of-16 (19 percent) from long range

- MHU shot 18-for-29 (62 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba was 13-of-22 (59 percent) from the charity stripe

- Mars Hill out-rebounded the Catawba Indians 53-28; their 19 offensive rebounds led to a 19-5 difference in second-chance points

- The Lions recorded eight assists and 23 turnovers to Catawba's four assists to 17 turnovers; Catawba took advantage in points off turnovers, 21-10

- The Catawba Indians led in points in the paint (26-24) and fastbreak points (9-4); the teams tied with 21 bench points 

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Janiya Foskey led the team with 10 points and five rebounds

- Mary Spry came off the bench for nine points in 15 minutes

- Nala Baker and Bailee Goodlett added eight points

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Mars Hill scored five straight to take a 9-4 lead near the midway point

- Maddie Gillie's three-pointer made it 17-8 MHU at 3:45

- The Lions led 24-14 at the break

 

SECOND QUARTER

- Janus' and-one cut Catawba's deficit to six

- MHU led 37-32 at the break

 

THIRD QUARTER

- The Lions' 9-0 run gave them a 48-35 advantage at the midway point of the third

- Catawba ended the third period on their own 9-0 run to cut their deficit all the way down to 51-48 with 10 minutes to go

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- Natalie Fuertes Lara's layup brought the game back to a single possession with Mars Hill leading 56-54 at the 6:41 mark

- It would be the last time Catawba would score, as Mars Hill kept the Catawba Indians from converting their final nine shot attempts as MHU pulled away late
