
Women’s Basketball drops home contest to Limestone
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team fell in its delayed home contest with Limestone on Thursday night, 72-66, in Goodman Arena in South Atlantic Conference action.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Limestone was 21-for-49 (43 percent) from the field, while Catawba went 25-of-60 (42 percent) from the floor
- The Saints were 7-for-12 (58 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians went 5-of-19 (26 percent) from long range
- LU was 23-for-25 (92 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba was 11-for-19 (58 percent)
- Both teams recorded 34 rebounds; Catawba took advantage of 12 offensive rebounds to win the second-chance battle 11-6
- The Saints had 12 assists to 14 turnovers; Catawba recorded 10 assists to 16 turnovers; Limestone out-scored Catawba 19-9 in points off turnovers
- Catawba dominated in the paint, leading 38-16, but Limestone had leads in fastbreak points (11-7) and bench points (26-23)
- Both teams held seven-point leads, but the margin was never more than that on either side
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Janiya Foskey scored a game-high 28 points for her sixth straight game of 20-plus points, going 11-for-16 from the field and grabbing 10 rebounds with three steals
- Nala Baker was the other Catawba Indian in double figures with 11 points and two assists
- Sydney Gueterman and Mary Spry both added eight points in 13 minutes off the bench; Gueterman buried a pair of three-pointers
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Catawba opened up an early 7-3 lead at the 5:41 mark
- After the Catawba Indians built on the lead a quick 5-0 personal run from Aniyah Jones helped the Saints tie the game at 12 in the closing seconds
- Baker drained a triple with 11 seconds to go to take a 15-12 lead after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- Foskey's layup in the opening minute brought Catawba's lead back to five points
- Gueterman's layup at the 8:07 mark gave Catawba its biggest lead of the game at 21-14
- The Saints brought the deficit to three near the midway point
- Limestone tied the game at 31 in the final two minutes, but Catawba led 32-31 heading into the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- Limestone hit two triples right out of the second half to take a 37-32 lead in the first 90 seconds
- Foskey and Spry layups cut Catawba's deficit to a single point
- Foskey then drained a three-pointer to go ahead 45-42 at the 2:57 mark
- Limestone scored four straight points to end the period to take a 49-48 lead into the final 10 minutes
FOURTH QUARTER
- Catawba tied the game three separate times in the fourth, but never took a lead as Limestone led by five with 3:42 to go
- Spry's and-one brought it to a single-possession game, but Catawba was unable to get any closer, falling at home 72-66
