
Foskey and Spry combine for 21 in fourth; Women’s Basketball snaps #9 Coker’s 14-game win streak in Play4Kay Game
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team handed 9th-ranked and South Atlantic Conference leader Coker just its second loss of the season Wednesday night inside Goodman Arena, snapping the Cobras' 14-game win streak behind a combined 41 points from forwards Janiya Foskey and Mary Spry.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 24-for-53 (45 percent) from the field, while Coker was held to 18-of-47 (38 percent) from the floor
- The Cobras were 5-for-17 (29 percent) from three-point range, while the Catawba Indians went 4-for-15 (27 percent) from deep
- Catawba shot 19-for-24 (79 percent) at the free throw line; Coker was 24-for-31 (77 percent) from the charity stripe
- Catawba out-rebounded Coker 32-31, as 11 offensive rebounds helped the Catawba Indians to a slim 8-7 edge in second-chance points
- Catawba recorded 13 assists to 17 turnovers, while the Cobras had nine assists to 17 turnovers; Coker out-scored Catawba 18-9 in points off turnovers
- Catawba led in points in the paint (28-20) and bench points (35-18)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Foskey recorded her fourth straight 20-point game with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting with 10 rebounds and three steals
- Spry added a career-high 20 points on a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and 13 points coming in the fourth quarter alone
- Nala Baker was the third Catawba Indian in double figures with 13 points
- Saniya Wilson chipped in nine points and three assists in 17 minutes off the bench
- Natalie Fuertes Lara grabbed six rebounds off the bench
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Coker led 9-2 after Kristynn Knight's layup near the midway point
- Jada Porter's three-pointer cut the deficit to a single possession at the 3:08 mark
- A late free throw gave Coker a 16-10 lead after the opening quarter
SECOND QUARTER
- The Cobras grew their lead to 23-12 over two minutes into the second period to force a Catawba timeout; Coker led by as much as 13 in the early second quarter
- Wilson's layup helped whittle the Catawba deficit down to 34-27 with 90 seconds to go in the opening half
- The Cobras led 36-28 at the break
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba continued to cut into the Coker lead in the third, as Baker's jumper made it 42-37 just after the midway point
- The Catawba Indians got within a single point, but never led in the third, trailing 49-46 heading into the final period
FOURTH QUARTER
- A Foskey jumper and a Spry layup gave Catawba its first lead since 2-0 a minute into the fourth
- A 7-0 run capped by Wilson's driving layup gave Catawba a 59-52 cushion at the 5:45 mark
- Catawba scored six straight of its points through Spry, answering each of Coker's baskets to keep the Cobras at bay until Kamari Thompson's free throws made it 65-63 with just over two minutes to go
- Spry's layup with 1:07 to go pushed the lead back to multiple possessions and Catawba got the offensive rebound on a missed second free throw to milk the clock and salt away the victory at the charity stripe
GAME NOTES
- Catawba's fourth win over a top-10 ranked team in the WBCA poll; first since defeating #8 Cal State-Dominguez Hills in the 2023 national quarterfinal
- Foskey's fifth double-double of the season, second game of 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds (win at Tusculum on Dec. 11)
- Catawba maintains pace for fourth in the SAC standings with the win with Anderson
