
Third quarter sinks Women’s Basketball at #16 Coker
Hartsville, S.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team held a halftime lead over 16th-ranked Coker, but was outscored 17-3 in the third quarter to fall 58-50 in South Atlantic Conference play in the DeLoach Center on Wednesday night.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 19-for-57 (33 percent) from the field, while holding Coker to 16-for-52 (31 percent) from the floor
- The Catawba Indians were 3-for-9 (33 percent) from three-point range, while the Cobras went 4-of-18 (22 percent) from long range
- Coker was 22-for-25 (88 percent) from the free throw line; Catawba went 9-of-14 (64 percent) at the charity stripe
- Coker out-rebounded Catawba 46-33; the Cobras converted 14 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points to just four for Catawba
- The Cobras recorded nine assists to 25 turnovers, while Catawba had six assists to 20 turnovers; Coker held a slight edge 14-13 in points off turnovers
- The teams both scored 22 points in the paint; Coker had twice as many fastbreak points (16-8), while Catawba won the battle of the benches (19-12)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Janiya Foskey notched a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way
- Nala Baker chipped in eight points and four rebounds
- Bailee Goodlett added six points and two assists
- Julie Janus canned two three-pointers off the bench
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Coker scored four straight to break a tie game, leading 11-7 at the 4:27 mark
- Catawba answered right back with four more to tie the game at 11
- The Cobras added four more to end the period, leading 15-11 after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- Foskey's and-one capped a 5-0 run for Catawba to take their first lead since 4-3
- Catawba's lead grew to five following another Foskey jumper after the midway point; Catawba led 24-21 at the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- Coker scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 30-24 lead near the midway point
- Catawba's only points in the frame were from Janus' three-pointer at the 2:26 mark
- The Cobras went on to score the final eight points of the third, leading 38-27 heading into the final period
FOURTH QUARTER
- The lead got to as large as 15 points for Coker in the opening minutes of the fourth following Shawntenna Tillman's three-pointer
- The Catawba deficit did not dip below 10 points until the final second, as Catawba scored the game's final six points, falling 58-50
GAME NOTES
- Coker snaps their 17-game losing streak to Catawba in the all-time series
- Coker's first win in Hartsville over Catawba since January 1974
- Catawba's second time this season scoring under 60 points (49 - 12/14 vs. Carson-Newman)
