#10 Carson-Newman earns season sweep of Women’s Basketball

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team saw its 33-game home regular season and 23-game home South Atlantic Conference win streaks come to an end on Saturday at the hands of 10th-ranked Carson-Newman in Goodman Arena on Saturday afternoon.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Carson-Newman shot 28-for-61 (46 percent) from the field, while Catawba went 13-of-40 (33 percent) from the floor

- The Catawba Indians went 3-for-10 (30 percent) from three-point range; the Eagles were 8-of-27 (30 percent) from deep

- Catawba shot 20-of-22 (91 percent) from the free throw line, while C-N was just 3-of-9 (33 percent) from the charity stripe

- Carson-Newman out-rebounded Catawba 35-31, leading to a 12-7 edge in second-chance points

- The Eagles recorded 19 assists to 22 turnovers, while Catawba had seven assists to 28 turnovers; C-N held a significant 28-11 lead in points off turnovers

- Carson-Newman held leads in points in the paint (30-12) and bench points (20-17)

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bailee Goodlett scored a team-high 12 points and three steals

- Brooklin Ingram added seven points

- Kairah Dixon-Booker and Janiya Foskey both scored six points and grabbed five and four rebounds, respectively

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- After the teams traded baskets to open the game, Carson-Newman opened up a 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead midway through the opening period

- The Eagles led 18-9 after 10 minutes

 

SECOND QUARTER

- Campbell Penland's three-pointer pushed the C-N lead to 26-13 just under the eight-minute mark

- The lead grew to 17 at the 5:45 mark

- Buckets from Sheree Gidney and Imani Williams trimmed the deficit to 32-19 a couple minutes later

- Makayla Alvey answered with a triple to return the lead to 18 points

- C-N led 40-20 at the break

 

THIRD QUARTER

- Carson-Newman added to their lead in the second half, scoring the third quarter's first eight points, leading 48-20 at the 8:16 mark

- The Eagles grew over 30 near the midway point of the third

- Carson-Newman's largest lead of the game came at the 1:40 mark, leading 62-26

- Four Catawba free throws made the score 62-30 with 10 minutes left

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- The Catawba Indians chipped away in the fourth, getting the deficit under 30 near the midway point

- Catawba ended the game on a 13-0 run to trim the final margin to 18 points

 

GAME NOTES

- Catawba's first regular season home loss and home loss to a SAC opponent since Wingate topped the Catawba Indians in February 2022
