Baker’s career-high not enough for Women’s Basketball at UVA Wise

Wise, Va. —- Catawba senior Nala Baker dropped a career-high 26 points at UVA Wise on Wednesday evening, but the Cavaliers came away with the 87-65 win in South Atlantic Conference play at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- UVA Wise shot 33-for-62 (53 percent) while holding Catawba to 23-for-66 (35 percent) from the field

- The Cavaliers were 5-for-14 (36 percent) from three-point range, while the Catawba Indians were 6-of-21 (29 percent) from long range

- Catawba was 13-for-20 (65 percent) at the free throw line; Wise went 16-for-28 (57 percent) at the charity stripe

- UVA Wise out-rebounded the Catawba Indians 48-33, but Catawba held the 12-8 advantage in second-chance points

- The Cavaliers recorded 26 assists to 25 turnovers, while the Catawba Indians had 15 assists to 22 turnovers; Wise held a 23-16 advantage in points off turnovers

- UVA Wise held the edge in points in the paint (44-34), fastbreak points (17-16) and bench points (35-21)

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Baker scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and a 3-of-5 mark from three-point range

- Mazie Helpman was the other Catawba Indian in double figures with a career-high 12 points in eight minutes

- Bailee Goodlett and Sydney Gueterman added seven points apiece

- Kairah Dixon-Booker grabbed a team-high six rebounds; Julie Janus dished out a team-best four assists

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Goodlett's three-pointer and Baker's layup pushed Catawba to an 8-4 lead just under the eight-minute mark

- Five straight points from UVA Wise's Sable Burnside turned the lead to the Cavs' favor

- The Cavaliers scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 21-14 lead after 10 minutes

 

SECOND QUARTER

- Baker scored the first 11 points of the quarter for Catawba, but UVA Wise still led 29-25 at the 6:45 mark

- A 9-0 run from the Cavaliers pushed the hosts' lead to 40-26 with under three minutes to go in the opening half

- Burnside's late basket made it a 45-30 UVA Wise lead heading into the break

 

THIRD QUARTER

- Baker's and-one got Catawba off to a good start, cutting the deficit to 12 points

- The Cavaliers scored the game's next 17 points over eight and a half minutes

- Goodlett broke Catawba's scoreless streak with a free throw, but Wise answered with a late three-pointer to take a 30-point lead into the fourth quarter

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- Natalie Fuertes Lara and Baker combined to score the first six points of the fourth quarter to cut into the Cavaliers' lead

- UVA Wise pushed their lead back to nearly 30 points on Emilea Preece's three-pointer at the 7:46 mark

- The Cavs' largest lead of the game came at 80-46 with 4:22 remaining

- Helpman scored 10 points in the final 1:20 of the game, helping draw Catawba closer, as the Catawba Indians finished on a 19-7 run
