Six score in double figures in Women’s Basketball’s loss at #9 Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team saw six score in double figures at 9th-ranked Carson-Newman, but the Eagles handed Catawba its first loss in South Atlantic Conference play of the season, 92-80, at Holt Fieldhouse.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Carson-Newman shot 36-of-72 (50 percent) from the field, while Catawba was 28-for-60 (47 percent) from the floor

- The Catawba Indians went 8-for-22 (36 percent) from three-point range; the Eagles were 7-of-23 (30 percent) from deep

- Catawba went 16-for-21 (76 percent) at the free throw line, while C-N was 13-for-20 (65 percent) from the charity stripe

- Carson-Newman out-rebounded the Catawba Indians 44-28, leading to a 19-9 edge in second-chance points

- The Eagles recorded 24 assists to 13 turnovers, while Catawba had 15 assists to 17 turnovers; C-N enjoyed an 18-7 lead in points off turnovers

- Carson-Newman held a 50-26 lead in points in the paint, but the Catawba Indians had 39 bench points to the Eagles' 23

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Sydney Gueterman led the team in scoring for the second consecutive game, scoring 14 points off the bench

- Nala Baker added 13 points on an efficient 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range, along with three assists

- Janiya Foskey flirted with a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds

- Brooklin Ingram chipped in a career-high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting

- Bailee Goodlett recorded 11 points and three assists, white Saniya Wilson was the sixth Catawba Indian in double figures with 10

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Carson-Newman scored the opening basket of the game and Baker answered with a three-pointer in what would be their only lead of the game

- The Eagles took the lead from there, scoring the next six points

- C-N extended their advantage to double digits later in the period, leading 24-14 at the 1:39 mark

- Ingram's three-pointer with five seconds left in the quarter capped a high-scoring opening 10 minutes with the Catawba Indians trailing 26-19

 

SECOND QUARTER

- A Goodlett basket got the Catawba deficit as low as four, but Carson-Newman answered seven straight to extend their lead to 11 points

- The teams traded points the rest of the period with the deficit never dipping below eight; the Eagles led 45-36 at the break

 

THIRD QUARTER

- A pair of free throws from Carson-Newman's Jennifer Sullivan grew the Eagle led to 14 points near the midway point of the quarter

- Julie Janus' three-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter trimmed the deficit to 71-60 at the end of three quarters

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- Back-to-back Carson-Newman three-pointers pushed their lead to 77-60 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter

- The lead reached 20 points near the midway point after a Sullivan layup

- A Wilson and-one capped a run of five straight points to cut the deficit to 15 at the 4:25 mark

- The Eagle lead got to as little as 12 after a Gueterman three-pointer near the minute mark
