
#17 Women’s Basketball’s season ends in Southeast Region semis
Salisbury, N.C. —- The 17th-ranked and top-seeded Catawba College women's basketball team saw its season come to end on its home floor on Saturday night, falling to 11th-ranked and 5th-seed Georgia Southwestern, snapping the nation-leading 34-game home win streak.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Georgia Southwestern shot 33-for-61 (54 percent) from the field, while holding Catawba to 22-of-66 (33 percent)
- The Hurricanes were 6-for-12 (50 percent) from three-point range, while the Catawba Indians went 6-of-25 (24 percent) from deep
- Catawba was 13-for-18 (72 percent) at the free throw line, while GSW went 16-for-24 (67 percent) at the charity stripe
- Both teams grabbed 40 rebounds, but GSW held a 14-8 advantage in second-chance points
- Catawba recorded 13 assists to 14 turnovers, while the Hurricanes had 10 assists to 12 turnovers, but it was GSW to out-score Catawba 17-11 in points off turnovers
- GSW out-scored Catawba in points in the paint (42-28), fastbreak points (23-4) and bench points (19-8)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Sara McIntosh scored a team-high 20 points with six rebounds before fouling out of the contest
- Janiya Downs added 17 points with five made three-pointers
- Janiya Foskey chipped in eight points and seven boards
- Lyrik Thorne scored eight points with six assists and four rebounds in
- McIntosh, Downs and Thorne played their final games in a Catawba uniform, with each scoring at least 1,000 points, the first trio in the same graduating class to each score 1,000 points
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- McIntosh scored Catawba's first six points, leading 6-2 after her layup at the 6:48 mark
- GSW answered with the game's next eight points to take a lead they would hold the rest of the way
- The Hurricanes raced out to an 18-8 lead after a layup near the 2-minute mark
- A late jumper had GSW up 24-12 at the first quarter break
SECOND QUARTER
- GSW scored the second quarter's first 11 points to extend their run to 13-0 and 33-6, leading by 23 after Kayla Langley's layup at the 6:46 mark
- The lead reached 41-14 after a three-pointer with just over three minutes left in the half
- Two technical free throws and a bucket cut into GSW's lead
- Langley's layup in the closing seconds of the half gave them a 45-18 advantage at the break
THIRD QUARTER
- The Hurricane lead reached its largest of the game in the first two minutes of the second half, 51-19
- The Catawba Indians chipped away, trailing by 25 with three minutes left in the quarter
- Destiny Garrett connected on another layup to boost the GSW lead to 63-36 after three quarters
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Hurricanes opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, returning their lead to north of 30 points
- A series of jumpers from Downs did get the deficit down to 20 at the 3:56 mark
