Softball splits penultimate SAC DH at UVA Wise

Wise, Va. —- The Catawba College softball forced a split with UVA Wise in game two of a twinbill with the Cavaliers on the road in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday.

 

GAME ONE | UVA Wise 7, Catawba 1

TEAM STATISTICS

- UVA Wise out-hit Catawba 10-3

- The Cavaliers recorded five of six extra-base hits and three of four homers

- Both teams committed an error

- The Catawba Indians left three errors on base; Wise stranded eight

- UVA Wise recorded the lone stolen base in game one

- The Cavalier pitchers allowed a run on three hits, striking out six; Catawba's staff allowed seven runs on 10 hits and five walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kary Hales homered

- Christina Brendle and Courtnee Carter singled

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FOURTH INNING

- A UVA Wise two-run homer started the scoring in the fourth

- A one-out RBI single pushed the Cavs' lead to three

 

FIVE INNING

- Another two-run blast pushed Wise's advantage to 5-0

 

SIXTH INNING

- Lindsey Polan's second homer of the game made it a 7-0 lead

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Hales broke up the shutout with a one-out homer in the seventh

 

GAME TWO | Catawba 5, UVA Wise 3

TEAM STATISTICS

- Both teams recorded eight hits

- Both teams had three extra-base hits

- UVA Wise had both errors in game two

- Catawba left six runners on base; Wise stranded 10

- Wise had the lone stolen base in game two

- Catawba's starter allowed three runs on eight hits and six walks, striking out five; Wise's staff allowed four earned runs on eight hits and one walk, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Alex Baquie went the distance to earn the win, allowing three runs with five final frames to finish the outing

- Hales was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored

- Brianna Herring added two hits including a double, scoring twice

- Brianna Gallagher doubled and tripled

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Hales brought in two in scoring position in the first with a one-out single to right center

- UVA Wise's Mallory McKnight got one back with an RBI double with one out in the bottom half

 

SECOND INNING

- Adyson Gibson's two-run single through the right side gave the Cavaliers a 3-2 lead in the second

 

THIRD INNING

- Hales beat out an infield single to the shortstop with two outs in the third to tie the game

- A two-out throwing error allowed Catawba to take the lead, 4-3

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Gallagher's RBI triple in the top of the seventh provided a run of insurance

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Wednesday, hosting USC Aiken in a rain makeup; first pitches are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
