Softball comes through in extras to force split at Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn. —- The Catawba College softball team bounced back from an opening loss in a doubleheader at Carson-Newman on Tuesday with an extra-inning win over the Eagles in South Atlantic Conference action.

 

GAME ONE | Carson-Newman 9, Catawba 1 - 5 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Carson-Newman out-hit Catawba 13-1

- The Eagles recorded five of six extra-base hits and two of three homers

- The Catawba Indians committed the lone error of the contest

- Catawba left two runners on base; C-N stranded four

- Carson-Newman recorded two of three stolen bases

- The Eagles' starter allowed a run on one hit and two walks, striking out three; Catawba's starter allowed nine runs on 13 hits and a walk, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kate Holland took the loss in the circle, striking out five in 4.2

- Rachel Pressley recorded her first collegiate homer

- Brianna Gallagher walked

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Carson-Newman placed a two-out single to left in the first to get on the board before Santana Anderson's two-run homer made it 3-0

 

SECOND INNING

- The Eagles continued scoring in the second with a leadoff homer

- A sac fly extended the C-N advantage to 5-0

 

THIRD INNING

- Pressley was the first Catawba batter to reach base safely with a solo homer to leadoff the third

 

FOURTH INNING

- Carson-Newman answered with a two-out infield single to make it 6-1

 

FIFTH INNING

- Three separate RBI singles brought C-N to the mercy-rule limit, taking game one 9-1

 

GAME TWO | Catawba 8, Carson-Newman 6 - 8 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Carson-Newman 14-10

- Both teams recorded four extra-base hits; the Eagles had two of three homers

- The Catawba Indians left five runners on base; C-N stranded nine

- Both teams recorded a stolen base

- Catawba's starter allowed six runs on 10 hits and five walks, striking out three; Carson-Newman's staff allowed six earned runs on 14 hits and two walks, striking out 10

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kary Hales was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBI and two runs scored

- Micaela Hartman went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored

- Brianna Gallagher also added three hits including a double with two runs scored

- Kirstyn Herman doubled

- Alex Baquie earned the win in the circle on the complete game, allowing six runs with five strikeouts

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- Hales led off the second with a solo blast to right

- Brianna Herring drove in a run on a two-out RBI single, giving the visitors an early 2-0 lead

 

THIRD INNING

- Gallagher's two-out double was followed by Hales' two-out, RBI double to extend the lead to three

 

FOURTH INNING

- Hartman dropped in a single down the left field line to score Catawba's fourth run

 

FIFTH INNING

- Molly Strider brought home two on a two-out single through the left side; Catawba led 6-0

- A one-out grand slam and a two-out RBI single brought the Eagles all the way back within a run in the bottom half

 

SEVENTH INNING

- MacCauley Bailey's tied the game on a solo homer to lead off the seventh

 

EIGHTH INNING

- A groundout moved Catawba's inherited runner to third and Hartman provided the go-ahead hit with a single up the middle

- Savanna Balderston's two-out RBI single provided insurance

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Saturday for Senior Day, hosting Lincoln Memorial for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
