
Carter’s walk-off sac fly forces Softball split versus Newberry
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team earned a high-scoring split with Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action at Whitley Field on Saturday, highlighted by Courtnee Carter's walk-off sac fly in the bottom of the seventh of game two.

TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba out-hit Newberry 18-16
- Catawba recorded seven of 12 extra-base hits
- The Catawba Indians committed all five errors in the contest

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST INNING
- Grace Flynn singled and stole second to open up the home half of the first
- Brendle's RBI double brought her home
- Hales added another run on an RBI single
- Aliters' three-run homer made it a 5-0 Catawba lead
SECOND INNING
- Newberry got a run back in the second on an RBI double
THIRD INNING
- Two RBI singles and a Catawba error allowed three Wolves runs to score, to cut their deficit to a single run
- Carter's two-out solo homer returned Catawba's lead to 6-4
FIFTH INNING
- A leadoff homer, two wild pitches, an RBI single and a grand slam constituted an 8-run fifth inning for Newberry, taking a 12-6 lead
SIXTH INNING
- A sac fly and a throwing error allowed two more Newberry runs to score, leding 14-6
- Hales' two-out RBI double in the bottom half allowed the game to continue, as Catawba trailed 14-7
SEVENTH INNING
- Savanna Balderston singled to score a run to start the scoring in the seventh
- Brendle and Gallagher kept the line moving with back-to-back RBI singles to cut the deficit to 14-10
- Hales' three-run homer brought the deficit to one and brought the tying run to the plate, which Newberry was able to retire

- The Wolves jumped out to an early lead with a three-run homer in the second
THIRD INNING
- Newberry added three more thirds in the third on a bases-loaded walk, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly
FOURTH INNING
- A bases-loaded walk extended Newberry's lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth
- Gallagher got Catawba on the board in the fourth on a one-out, solo homer
FIFTH INNING
- An RBI single and an error allowed Newberry to score twice more, pushing their lead to 9-1
- Church lifted a solo homer to right in the bottom half
- Brendle added another run on an RBI single to center; the Wolves led 9-3
SIXTH INNING
- Samantha Clark's solo homer put the Wolves' lead back to seven
- A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Catawba with nobody out in the bottom half
- Church moved everyone up 60 feet on an RBI single
- Brianna Herring drew a walk, Flynn drove in another on an RBI single up the middle and Brendle's two-run double cut it to 10-8
- Hartman's two-run single capped a seven-run frame for Catawba to tie the game after six
SEVENTH INNING
- A two-base error allowed Catawba to get into scoring position with nobody out
- Catawba stole third, which allowed Carter's sac fly to score the winning run on the 48th run of the day between the two teams
