Softball keeps homers coming in split at Belmont Abbey

Belmont, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team wrapped up a stretch of six games in four days on Monday, splitting a doubleheader at Belmont Abbey in non-conference softball action.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 14, Belmont Abbey 1 - 5 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Belmont Abbey 14-3

- The Catawba Indians recorded all three extra-base hits

- The Crusaders committed all six errors in the contest

- BAC left five runners on base; Catawba stranded 10

- The Catawba Indians recorded all four stolen bases

- Catawba's starter allowed one run on three hits and two walks, striking out four; Belmont Abbey's staff allowed seven earned runs on 14 hits and five walks, striking out three

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Brianna Gallagher was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored

- Jordan McCorkle recorded a grand slam in a pinch-hit at-bat

- Kary Hales went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored

- Molly Strider added two hits, including a double with three runs scored

- Kate Holland went the distance, throwing five innings with one run, striking out four

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Belmont Abbey hit a two-out homer to start the scoring in the bottom of the first

 

SECOND INNING

- Christina Brendle laced an RBI single with two outs with the bases loaded

- Gallagher followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1

 

THIRD INNING

- A hit-by-pitch, a walk and a single loaded the bases for Catawba with one out in the third

- An error allowed two more runs to come home for the Catawba Indians

- Brendle recorded another RBI on a fielder's choice

- Gallagher and Hales both scored another on RBI singles to make it 8-1 after three

 

FOURTH INNING

- Strider's leadoff double allowed Kinsley Caldwell's two-out single to score her, leading 9-1

 

FIFTH INNING

- Three singles loaded the bases once again with no outs for Catawba in the fifth

- Maddy Altiers' drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring another run

- McCorkle cleared them with a pinch-hit grand slam to left field, putting the visitors up 14-1

 

GAME TWO | Belmont Abbey 5, Catawba 3

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Belmont Abbey 10-8

- The Crusaders recorded four of seven extra-base hits

- The Catawba Indians committed the lone error in the contest

- BAC left five runners on base; Catawba stranded nine

- The Catawba Indians stole two of three bases

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Alex Baquie struck out seven in four innings in the start; Bri Herring pitched two innings with an unearned run allowed

- Grace Flynn was 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored

- Hales and Strider repeated with multi-hit games

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Belmont Abbey went for another two-out homer in game two, scoring two to take the early lead

 

FIFTH INNING

- With two runners in scoring position with less than two outs, Belmont Abbey singled through the left side to plate two more runs and followed with a two-out RBI single to make it 5-0

 

SIXTH INNING

- Flynn got the two-out rally started with a three-run home run down the left field line, but the runs stopped there for Catawba, settling with a split

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to action at Whitley Field on Thursday, hosting USC Aiken for a doubleheader starting at 2 and 4 p.m.
