Softball pushes win streak to four with road sweep over Barton

Wilson, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team earned its third and fourth straight road victories on Wednesday, sweeping the Barton Bulldogs on the road in non-conference softball action.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 6, Barton 3

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Barton 15-7

- The Catawba Indians had three of four extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error

- The Bulldogs left seven runners on base; Catawba stranded nine

- BC stole seven of eight bases in the contest

- Barton's pitchers allowed six earned runs on 15 hits and one walk, striking out six; Catawba's staff allowed two earned runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out 10

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kate Holland earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in three innings of work

- Alex Baquie allowed no earned runs in three innings in the start; Bella Boykin got the save with two strikeouts in a scoreless frame

- Kary Hales was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored

- Maddy Altiers went 2-for-2 with a homer, two RBI and a run scored

- Grace Flynn and Christina Brendle also recorded multi-hit games

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Barton's leadoff hitter walked, stole second and advanced home on a passed ball and a wild pitch

 

SECOND INNING

- Altiers answered with a one-out, solo homer in the second

 

FOURTH INNING

- Brianna Gallagher led off the fourth inning with a single and Hales' double drove her home as Catawba took the lead

- Molly Strider's infield single scored Hales from third after she advanced on a wild pitch

- Micaela Hartman recorded a two-out RBI single to cap the scoring in the frame and bring home Strider, leading 4-1

 

FIFTH INNING

- Three singles loaded the bases with one out in the fifth for the Catawba Indians

- Altiers' RBI sac fly drove a run home to extend the lead to four runs

 

SIXTH INNING

- Two singles and a double steal put runners on second and third for the Bulldogs with nobody out

- A two-out, two-RBI single cut Barton's deficit to 5-3

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Catawba provided insurance in the seventh when Alexis Monroe delivered a two-out RBI single to right field, but Boykin wouldn't need it, as she struck out the first two batters and survived a two-out single with the third out

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Barton 8-2

- The Catawba Indians recorded the lone extra-base hit, a homer

- Both teams committed an error in game two

- The Bulldogs left two runners on base, while Catawba stranded four

- The Catawba Indians recorded the lone stolen base of the game

- Barton's start allowed two earned runs on eight hits, striking out one; Catawba's pitcher threw allowed no earned runs on just two hits with one strikeout

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Brianna Herring pitched a complete game, allowing an unearned run on two hits, striking out one

- Gallagher went 2-for-3 with a homer

- Grace Flynn also went for two hits in game two

- Strider drove in two

- Courtnee Carter and Hales singled and scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- Gallagher launched a solo shot with one out in the second to break a scoreless tie

 

THIRD INNING

- A throwing error allowed Barton get into scoring position and the Bulldogs capitalized, scoring on an RBI single from MacKenzie Taylor to tie the game

 

SIXTH INNING

- Two leadoff singles from Flynn and Carter and an error allowed the Catawba Indians to load the bases with nobody out

- Strider broke through with a two-RBI single up the middle to give Catawba the late lead 3-1

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba heads to Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. on Saturday for the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic, facing Rollins at noon and Emmanuel at 2 p.m.
