McCorkle homers in first collegiate at-bat in Softball’s season-opening games at Valkyrie Classic

Duncan, S.C. —- The Catawba College softball team opened its 2025 season at the Valkyrie Classic in Duncan, S.C. on Saturday, dropping both ends of the season-opening doubleheader against Glenville State and Lynn.

 

GAME ONE | Glenville State 9, Catawba 4

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Glenville State 12-5

- The Catawba Indians recorded four of six extra-base hits in the game; both teams hit a homer

- Both teams committed an error

- The Pioneers left five runners on base, while Catawba stranded 10

- GSU recorded all four stolen bases in the game

- Glenville State's pitchers allowed three earned runs on 12 hits and a walk, striking out two; Catawba's staff gave up seven earned runs on five hits and five walks, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Brianna Herring went 2-for3 with two doubles and two runs scored

- Courtnee Carter was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored

- Jordan McCorkle hit a homer in her first collegiate at-bat as a pinch hitter

- Savanna Balderston added two hits with a double

- Alex Baqiue and Keira Bell combined for three innings with no earned runs

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- The Pioneers struck for two in the first off back-to-back RBI base hits

 

SECOND INNING

- Herring doubled to lead off the second

- Grace Flynn's two-out RBI single down the right field line drove her in

- GSU responded in the bottom half with an RBI sac bunt

 

THIRD INNING

- Carter singled and advanced to second on an error in the third

- Hales deposited an RBI single into left to get back within a run

- Glenville State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half, plating two with a single back up the middle to lead 5-2

 

FOURTH INNING

- A leadoff walk preceded a two-run homer for the Pioneers to push GSU's lead to five in the fourth

 

FIFTH INNING

- Herring once again led off an inning with a double in the fifth

- Maddy Aliters' single moved Herring up 60 feet, which allowed Flynn's sac fly to score her from third

- GSU scored in their fifth straight inning in the bottom half on a wild pitch and a passed ball

 

SEVENTH INNING

- With a pinch-hit opportunity in the seventh inning, McCorkle cranked a homer in her first collegiate at-bat

 

GAME TWO | Lynn 11, Catawba 4

TEAM STATISTICS

- Lynn out-hit Catawba 16-12

- Both teams recorded four extra-base hits; Lynn recorded the lone homer

- Catawba committed both errors of the contest

- Both teams left nine runners on base

- Lynn had five of six stolen bases in the contest

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Flynn had three hits in game two with a double, an RBI and a run scored

- Carter singled, drove in two and scored

- Gallagher, Christina Brendle and Rachel Pressley also doubled

- Bella Boykin threw 2.1 innings in her collegiate debut in the circle, allowing an earned run on four hits

- Baquie threw 1.2 innings of shutout relief, striking out two and allowing just one hit

- Catawba stays out west, finishing the weekend with a twinbill at Augusta tomorrow afternoon; first pitches are scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m.
