Walk-off wild pitch seals DH sweep for Softball

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team made it a clean sweep on Sunday afternoon, besting Frostburg State in a twinbill at Whitley Field.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 6, Frostburg State 3

TEAM STATS

- Both teams recorded 10 hits

- Catawba had four of six extra-base hits

- Frostburg State committed the lone error of the contest

- The Catawba Indians had both steals of the game

- Catawba's pitchers allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and four walks, striking out one; FSU's staff allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out three

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Kary Hales was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored

- Riley Tucker hit a two-run homer to help herself earn the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks

- Bri Herring drove in a run on a base hit and scored

- Grace Flynn singled and scored twice

- Aniyah King singled, stole two bases and scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

THIRD INNING

- King singled and stole second to lead off the third inning

- Herring's RBI single scored her

- Hales' two-out, two-RBI double gave the Catawba Indians an early 3-0 advantage

 

FIFTH INNING

- Ryann Darling with a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to cut their deficit to 3-2

- Flynn reached on an error before Tucker boomed a two-run homer down the right field line to re-gain the three-run lead

- Kinsley Caldwell extended the lead with a two-out, RBI double

 

SIXTH INNING

- FSU hit a pinch-hit homer to cut the lead back to three, but Herring would close the game's final two innings, allowing one earned run on four hits 

 

GAME TWO | Catawba 3, Frostburg State 2 - 8 innings

TEAM STATS

- Catawba out-hit Frostburg State 7-4

- The Catawba Indians had three of five extra-base hits, but FSU hit both homers of the contest

- The Bobcats had the lone error of the game

- Catawba's pitchers allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks; FSU's staff allowed two earned runs on seven hits, striking out four

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Hales earned the win in relief, shutting out the Bobcats over the final five innings, while allowing just one hit

- Herring hit an RBI double with a run scored

- Savanna Balderston recorded two hits

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

THIRD INNING

- FSU's one-out homer broke a scoreless tie in the third

 

FOURTH INNING

- The Bobcats doubled their lead in the fourth with another homer

 

FIFTH INNING

- Catawba got one back in the fifth on Herring's two-out, RBI double

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Down to their last out, Balderston's RBI single tied the game at 2

 

EIGHTH INNING

- Flynn bunted the runner on second with the international tie break to third

- Herring scored on a wild pitch to take game and the sweep

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Tuesday for a matinee doubleheader over Spring Break with Augusta; first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
