Six event wins highlights Track & Field's day at VMI Team Challenge

Lexington, VA -- The Catawba Track and Field team competed for the first time in 2024 at the the VMI Team Challenge. The team secured six event wins seeing huge days in sprints, jumps and distance events.

Finals Recap

Sprints & Hurdles 

60M 

Women- Mallory Witherspoon placed third with a time of 7.86. Lea Legros placed sixth with a time of 7.98 

 

Men- Catawba would place three athletes in the top five of the event. Winfred Porter secured first place with a time of 6.83 followed by Barja Walter who placed second running a time of 6.90. Brendan Henby finished in fourth place with a finish of 6.97 

 

200M 

Women- Efemena Egberi secured the win for Catawba running a time of 25.61. Mallory Witherspoon placed seventh with a finish of 26.41. Lea Legros ran a time of 26.65 to place ninth. 

Men- Barja Walter took the top podium spot running a 21.95 in the event. Winfred Porter claimed second with a time of 22.14. Brendan Henby claimed seventh place with a 23.14.  

 

60 M Hurdles 

Men- John Shearin IV secured a person best in the event with a time of 8.93 to claim eighth place 

 

400M 

Women- Onii Bivens had a seventh-place finish in the event clocking a time of 1:02.76 

 

Men- Jordan Grant claimed a fifth-place finish with a time of 51.90. Maquenly Crespo ran a time of 53.83 in the event which was good for a tenth-place finish. 

 

 

Distance 

Mile 

Women- Charity Davies placed fourth with a time of 5:19.16. Sydney Cockerham placed sixth running a 5:22.28 to give Catawba its second top-10 finisher in the event. 

 

Men- Catawba secured three top 10 finishers in the event. Anthony Lecorche placed second with a time of 4:23.68. Will Lyons had a third-place finish running a 4:24.15. Ej Threatt finished in eighth place with a 4:30.53 finish. 

 

600M 

Women- Raina Andrews secured third place in the event running a time of 1:40.62 

Men- Seth Caudill placed eight with a finish of 1:24.78 

 

3000M 

Women- Madison Clay brought home the win for Catawba running a time of 10:06.18 for the top podium spot. Jenna Coleman ran a time of 10:46.31 for a fourth-place finish. 

 

Men- Erick Ramirez earned the win taking the challenge win with a time 8:43.00. Stefan Lauchner followed Ramirez in second with a finish of 8:45.11. Oussama Ajala placed fourth with a time of 8:53.25. Tanner Smith followed in fifth with a 9:00.69. Eddie Urban placed sixth with a 9:02.25. Michael Martinez came in eight with a 9:11.93 finish.  

 

5000M 

Men- Andrew Whitehead placed fourth with a time 15:29.15. Brannon Burns followed in fifth with a time of 15:35.89. 

 

 

Jumps & Throws 

Long Jump 

Women- Onii Bivens claimed a top-10 finish jumping a distance of 4.90m 

 

Men- Javier Gomez-Wilson secured first with a leap of 7.08m. Chris Brown placed fourth at 6.85m. 

 

High Jump 

Men- Namaurion Koontz placed fifth with a height of 1.81m, Drew Costello finished in seventh with a mark of 1.71m. 

 

Triple Jump 

Men- Javier Gomez-Wilson placed third with distance of 14.02m. His second top three finish of the afternoon. Chris Brown placed fourth, leaping 13.87m.  

 

Pole Vault 

Men- Seth Drake went over a height of 3.76m for seventh place. 

 

Shot Put 

Women- Alyssa Krupa placed ninth with a toss of 10.10m 

 

Relays 

4x400 Meter Relay 

Men- A team of Tyler Johnson, Malik Hargrove, Barja Walter, and Jordan Grant placed sixth at Saturday's meet running a time of 3:36.23.
