
Tennis splits home matchup with Carson-Newman
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College Men's and Women's Tennis teams took on the Carson-Newman Eagles on Saturday at the Catawba Tennis Courts, with the men earning a 5-2 victory and the women dropping a hard-fought 4-3 contest. Catawba's men are now 4-5 on the season with a 3-0 start to SAC action, with the women now 7-3 and 2-1 in Conference play
HOW IT HAPPENED – Catawba Men 5 / Carson-Newman Men 2
- Catawba began the day by sweeping the Doubles' point in men's action, with both the No. 1 pairing of Edoardo Cecere and Ryan Little and the No. 3 pairing of Tyler Juergens and Paul Dekester earning 6-4 victories
- Catawba's No. 2 pairing of Mateo Berne and Marcos Castares would be even better, taking their match 6-3 over Matthew Saunders and Paul Gayk
- Cecere made quick work of Marnix Van Dalen on the No. 1 court, cruising to the victory with a pair of 6-1 victories
- Berne gave Catawba a 3-0 lead after defeating Marc Janse in three sets on Court No. 2. Berne would take the first set 6-3, only Janse to force a third frame with a 6-1 win. It would be Berne who held firm in the third set for the point, earning a 6-4 win and the match
- Juergens would be defeated by Gjorgji Jankulovski in three sets from the No. 3 position, winning the first match 6-3 but being unable to hang on as Janukolovski took the second set 6-1 and the third by a score of 1-0
- Alessandro Valletta clinched the win for Catawba on the day with both the win and the decisive fourth point on Court No. 4, downing Gayk in three sets. Valletta would win the first set 7-5, before Gayk took a 6-4 victory to force a third set. Similar to Berne, Valletta would clinch the win in the third set, this time with a score of 6-4
- Little would be defeated on Court No. 5 by Lars Hordijk, 8-3
- Casteres earned Catawba's final point of the game from the No. 6 position, defeating Saunders 6-4 and 6-2 for the final score of 5-2, Catawba
HOW IT HAPPENED – Catawba Women 3 / Carson-Newman Women 4
- Carson-Newman would open by taking the Doubles point, 2-1. For Catawba, Ami Miya and Rin Igarashi would take a 6-4 win on the No. 1 court; however, both the No. 2 pairing of Veronika Poliakova and Sofia Hernandez Mera and the No. 3 tandem of Tina Gomes and Nika Dundovic would be defeated by scores of 6-4
- Miya earned Catawba it's first point of the match by cruising to a win over Anita Chornei on the No. 1 court, 6-1 and 6-2
- Anna Wise would be defeated on the No. 2 court by Natasha Forrest, falling in three sets. Wise took the first set 6-3 and would just be edged out in the second round, 7-5; but Forrest would control the final set in a 6-1 win, putting Carson-Newman up 2-1
- Isidora Zivkovic was excellent in a win over Summer Reeves from the No. 3 position, taking the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-1 to tie the match up at 2-2
- Mati Moretti went down to Suryanshi on Court No. 4, 6-4 and 7-6
- Hernandez Mera would be defeated for the first time in Singles this season as she was beaten out by Sindija Manovska in three sets for Carson-Newman's clinching fourth point. Hernandez Mera earned the win in the first set, 6-4, but would be edged out by a score of 7-5 in the one that followed. Manovska would take the decisive third set by a score of 6-3
- Igarashi earned a point back for Catawba on the No. 6 court as she defeated Leah McBride in two sets, 6-2 and 6-4
