
Tennis sweeps at Mars Hill
Mars Hill, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis teams picked up wins at Mars Hill on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference tennis action. The men's team picked up a 7-0 win, while the women won 5-2. The Catawba men improve to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the SAC, while the 34th-ranked women improve to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in league action.
The men swept the three doubles matches as Marcos Castares and Ryan Little won #1 doubles 6-2, Paul Dekester and Tyler Juergens won #2s 6-4 and Sebastian Zabala and Taketoshi Nanao made it a clean sweep with a 6-4 win.
The men went on to take each of the six singles matches. Castares earned a 6-3, 6-2 win in #1 singles, Juergens took home an 8-6 win in #2s, Little won 6-2, 6-3 win the third spot, Dekester won 8-3 in #4s, Zabala won 6-2, 6-0 in #5s and Nanao made it a clean sweep with an 8-2 win in #6s.
The women won all three doubles matches as well, as Alexandra Parra and Ami Miya won 6-0, and Sofia Hernandez and Carolina Correia and Nika Dundovic and Tina Gomes earned hard-fought 7-6 wins.
Catawba took four of the six singles matches. Miya defeated her #2 singles opponent 6-1, 6-0, Parra earned a 6-3, 6-1 win in #3s, Vaishnavi Venkatesh won 6-2, 6-0 in #4s and Correia took home a 6-3, 6-1 win in #5s.
The teams are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Coker at 2 p.m.
