
Men’s Lacrosse drops high-scoring contest at #11 Anderson
ANDERSON, S.C. — After falling behind 7-1 in the first quarter, the Catawba College men's lacrosse team's comeback attempts fell short as No. 11 Anderson ran away with a 22-13 South Atlantic Conference triumph on Saturday.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba (8-4, 4-4 SAC) sent in 42 shots including 25 on goal while Anderson (9-3, 6-1 SAC) took 59 with 34 on net
- The blue and white were slightly more efficient on the clear, going 15-for-20 (.750) against the Trojans' 11-for-15 (.733)
- Anderson narrowly won the turnover battle 22-21, but held a firm grasp on the ground balls count at 45-28
- The Catawba Indians were penalized 10 times with 8:30 of penalty time, rivaling the five infractions for four minutes against the hosts
- The Trojans won 26 faceoffs split evenly between Aiden Dixon and AJ Rush; Catawba had 10 triumphs on the dot, led by Cael Petroff's nine
- Both squads tallied 12 saves; Ben LoPiccolo endured the loss for Catawba, while Adin Laughlin got the win in 43:10 of work for Anderson
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Tanner Stout found paydirt with five of his seven total shots, extending his scoring streak to 11 games
- Frank Cetrone, Michael Lindsey and Hunter Clarke netted two goals apiece
- Andrew Crumpacker tallied a two-point day, chipping in one strike while assisting another
- Owen Conway fronted the defensive effort with team highs of three caused turnovers and five ground balls
- LoPiccolo also recorded five ground ball pickups with two caused turnovers in the crease
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Nearly eight minutes passed without a score until AU's Max Calabrese broke the seal
- Catawba offered a swift response as Clarke corralled a rebound on the left wing and delivered the tying strike
- The Trojans were supplied with darts from Ryan Bitterman and Brayden Bushnoe in the next minute to take a 3-1 lead
- Following a man advantage goal, Anderson scored three times in the final 30 seconds for a 7-1 edge through the opening frame
Second Quarter
- Matthew Rodgers put a shot into the twine to start the period in the hosts' favor
- Crumpacker found paydirt in unassisted fashion, but a three-goal swing pushed the Anderson lead to 11-2
- Cetrone delivered a bullseye after spinning and slicing his way through the Trojan defense
- AU's PJ Fenchak matched the Catawba goal with 51 seconds until halftime, keeping the visitors' deficit at nine
Third Quarter
- A back-and-forth start saw Crumpacker connect with Stout and Lindsey take it himself on Catawba goals, but the Trojans responded each time
- Bitterman bookended a second Stout dart with his fifth and sixth goals of the afternoon, the second coming with a man advantage
- Lindsey took advantage of an Anderson goalie change, whipping in a top-shelf bullet less than a minute later
- Clarke closed the stanza with a goal in similar appearance to his first, cutting the gap down to 16-8 heading to the fourth
Fourth Quarter
- After a Ryan Butch strike to bring the Anderson advantage back up to nine, Boston Rehrer collected a contested faceoff and tickled the twine from 10 yards out
- Stout scored to prevent a 3-0 run for the Trojans, but nonetheless Anderson extended its edge to double digits at 20-10
- Gabriel Barker assisted Cetrone, then Jack Mercer connected with Stout moments later for a couple of Catawba tallies
- Stout fired a net-bound missile with help from Cetrone just before the 2:00 mark, but Anderson put in a pair of man advantage goals to finalize the 22-13 result
