
Men's Lacrosse downed by Anderson
Salisbury, N.C. – The Catawba College Men's Lacrosse team (6-6, 3-4 SAC) would be downed in a high-scoring affair by the Anderson Trojans (6-6, 4-2) in a conference battle at Shuford Stadium on Saturday, falling 21-10.
TEAM STATS
- Anderson outshot Catawba 56-37, as the Trojans put 31 attempts on goal to 21 for Catawba
- Anderson won the faceoff battle as well, 25-7. The Trojans would collect 42 ground balls, with Catawba players recovering 27
- Catawba won the turnover battle, giving possession away just 14 times while Anderson would cede possession 18 times. Catawba players caused 11 turnovers, to six for Anderson
- In goal, Catawba's trio of James Crighton, Brady Gauntner, and Tyler Ahlverscombined for 10 saves. For Anderson, Hunter Klosterman and Joey Heckel stopped 11 shots. Crighton took the loss, while Klosterman earned the win
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Frank Cetrone and Garrett Simi both tallied a pair of goals to lead Catawba, with six players scoring one each
- Simi would also assist a pair of goals, while Peyton Turner assisted another
- Jordan Dash, Gabriel Barker, and Cetrone all attempted five shots. Hunter Clarke, Turner, and Jack Hartall notched four
- Six Catawba players recovered two ground balls
- Eli Horton caused four turnovers to lead all players, with Kier McKnight creating two as well
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- It would be all Anderson early, with the visitors striking first after just 1:01 gone through Brayden Bushnoe. Logan Gaddis would tally Anderson's second at 12:46, with PJ Fenchak providing the assist before he made it a 3-0 lead with a goal at 9:36
- Fenchak would strike again just over two minutes later, with 7:13 on the clock
- Catawba found their breakthrough with a two-goal surge late in the quarter to cut the lead to 4-2, with Jackson Braswellbreaking the ice for the home side at 2:13 and Dash converting another just :46 seconds later off of a pass from Simi
SECOND QUARTER
- Anderson would have an answer to start the second frame, however, as Radyn Badraun and Nick Calabrese netted 1:08 apart at 13:37 and 12:29 to restore the four-goal lead for the Trojans
- Tyler Wedickstruck for Catawba with 10:37 before the half his side's third goal, only for Ryan Bitterman to score :30 seconds later and then again at 8:27 to give Anderson a 8-3 advantage
- Simi tallied his first goal of day at 6:47, with Badraun responding for Anderson :57 seconds afterwards
- Turner would score to pull Catawba back to within four at 9-5 with 2:23 before the half, only for Fenchak to complete his hat-trick at 1:47 and Gaddis to make it 11-5 Anderson with another goal :22 seconds afterwards
THIRD QUARTER
- Barker and Tristan Kirkham traded goals to open the second half, with Simi assisting Barker's goal at 13:39. Kirkham would score :34 seconds later
- A three-goal run in 1:06 saw Anderson take a 15-6 lead, led by Keaton Matthews at 8:46 and followed by both Matt Morganroth :12 seconds later and Kirkham again at 7:40
- The Trojans would rip off a similar run later in the quarter, with Max Calabrese netting at 5:34 and both Fenchak and Eli Marshall converting opportunities in the following 2:23. Marshall's goal at 3:11 would put Anderson up 18-6 going into the final quarter
FOURTH QUARTER
- Clarke pulled a goal back for Catawba at the 12:09 mark, only for Kirkham and Nick Calabrese to answer :17 seconds apart at 10:12 and 9:55 with Anderson now up 20-7
- Simi tallied his second goal for Catawba with 6:17 to go, with Cetrone joining him on the scoresheet at 3:53 off of an assist from Turner
- Marshall and Cetrone netted the final goals for their respective sides at 1:38 and :55, for the final score of Anderson 21, Catawba 10
NOTES
- Cetrone has now scored at least twice in four straight games, as he and Turner remain tied for the team lead at 33 points
- Horton has enjoyed an impressive defensive streak, causing at least three turnovers in three of the last four games
- Simi's two assists put him at 10 for the season, as he joins Turner as the only other player for Catawba to score 15 goals and assist 10 more
- For Simi, this was his second game with two goals and two assists, and his fourth game in the last five with two goals
