Tinsley’s career-high pushes Men’s Basketball’s win streak to six

Anderson, S.C. —-- The Catawba College men's basketball team extended their South Atlantic Conference-leading winning streak to six games on Saturday afternoon, defeating Anderson on the road, 79-73, in the Abney Athletic Center.

 

TEAM STATS

- Anderson shot 28-for-53 (53 percent) from the field; Catawba was 28-of-65 (43 percent) from the floor

- The Catawba Indians connected on 8-of-22 (36 percent) from three-point range, while the Trojans were 3-for-15 (20 percent) from deep

- AU was 14-for-17 (82 percent) from the free throw line; Catawba went 15-of-23 (65 percent) from the foul line

- The Catawba Indians out-rebounded Anderson 39-30 with 15 offensive rebounds helping the team to a 18-5 advantage in second-chance points

- The Trojans recorded 14 assists to 18 turnovers compared to Catawba's 12 assists and 13 turnovers; Catawba led 26-14 in points off turnovers

- Anderson dominated in the paint, out-scoring Catawba 46-18, but the Catawba Indians held edges in fastbreak points (9-2) and bench points (31-26)

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Tinsley posted a career-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting 

- Shad Thomas added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals

- DeAngelo Epps came off the bench for 12 more points

- Dre Nelson recorded nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 37 minutes

- Montraivis White pitched in seven points and Javeon Jones recorded five assists and four steals

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Nelson's three-pointer gave Catawba an early 5-1 lead

- A quick 5-0 spurt for AU flipped the game in their favor at the 17:28 mark

- Jerome Bivins canned a triple before Thomas' layup, as Catawba took a 19-14 lead near the 11-minute mark

- After the Catawba Indians led by as much as eight, Anderson whittled their deficit down to just two points at the 5:35 mark

- The Trojans regained the lead at the 3-minute mark, 30-29

- Catawba ended the half on a 7-0 run, leading 36-30 at the break

 

SECOND HALF

- The Catawba Indians scored the first five points to start the second half, extending the run to 12-0, taking a 41-30 lead on Peyton Gerald's dunk at the 18:33 mark

- Andre Wright Jr's free throws cut the AU deficit to seven less than two minutes later

- Back-to-back triples from Thomas and Tinsley pushed the lead back to double digits near the 15-minute mark

- The Trojans once again battled back, nearly cutting their deficit in half, trailing 51-44 at the 12:29 mark

- Nelson buried another three-pointer to push the lead back to 12 points near the midway point

- The lead reached 14 points following White's free throw at the 6:19 mark

- A 17-5 AU run trimmed their deficit all the way down to 69-67 at the 2:36 mark

- Tinsley's running floater at the 1:07 mark brought the Catawba lead to five

- Kaleb Wallace grabbed a key offensive rebound on a missed free throw, which allowed Epps sink two more free throws with 17 seconds left to seal the game with a six-point advantage
