They went from 48th in the country in defensive touchdowns to 13th in just two years while also going from the 88th-ranked team in passing yards allowed to being ranked 25th while also being top thirty nationally in total defense. In the 2017 season, Hubbard was promoted to Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, where he served for two seasons.

During Hubbard's first stint (2006-2012) on the Catawba Football staff as the Defensive Line Coach, Recruiting Coordinator, and video coordinator. As a player, Hubbard was a four-year standout at Catawba and closed his career with 169 tackles, 19.5 sacks, and fifty tackles for loss. He also helped lead the Indians to three South Atlantic Conference regular season titles during his career. At Catawba, he was a defensive captain, two-time all-conference, and all-region performer. His senior year saw him earn first-team All-American honors while being selected to represent Catawba in the Division Two All-Star game, the Cactus Bowl.
