PREVIEW: Football takes on first-year program Anderson in rare Sunday showdown

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College football team returns to Shuford Stadium for what is now game two of a four-game homestand, as the Catawba Indians take on first-year program Anderson in a game rescheduled to Sunday at 2 p.m.

 

THE MATCHUP

Who: Anderson (2-2, 0-2 SAC) at Catawba (1-3, 0-2 SAC)

Where: Shuford Stadium, Salisbury, N.C.

When: Sunday, Oct. 6, 2 p.m.

 

THE HISTORY

- Catawba and Anderson's first-ever meeting

- The Trojans are participating in their first season of competition

 

LAST TIME OUT

- Catawba fell in its home opener to SAC foe Carson-Newman, 35-34

- The Eagles scored the game-tying touchdown with 25 seconds left before converting the go-ahead point-after

- Catawba out-gained C-N 384-296

- Preston Brown threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns before suffering a game-ending injury

- LJ Turner rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground

- Deuce Linder and Kobe Christian combined for 150 yards receiving

 

IT'S LJ'S TURN-ER

- Turner has taken the reigns of the back field, leading the Catawba Indians in rushing in each of their four games

- The Palm Bay, Fla. native has rushed for at least 64 yards in every game this season, averaging nearly 85 yards per game on 5.8 yards per tote

- In addition to yardage, Turner has found the end zone on the ground in each of Catawba's last three games

 

KYIEV KAOS

- Defensive tackle Kyiev Bennermon has come on strong for the Catawba Indians as of late, recording two sacks in last week's loss versus Carson-Newman

- Bennermon also recorded tackles and helped plug up the middle in the Carson-Newman option

 

NEXT MAN UP

- Deno Wardlow led the South Atlantic Conference in tackles after three games, but missed the Carson-Newman game due to injury

- Dru Dotter stepped up in his place, leading Catawba with 10 tackles last Saturday

 

SCOUTING THE TROJANS

- After Anderson won its opening two non-conference games, the Trojans have fallen back to .500, falling in its opening two SAC contests versus Limestone and at Barton

- In their first year of competition, the Trojans were picked 12th of 12 in the SAC preseason poll

- Limestone defeated Anderson 52-5 in the Trojans' first-ever league game; the Saints recorded 559 yards of total offense behind reigning SAC Player of the Year Dustin Noller

- Anderson allowed 289 passing yards and two touchdowns in its last outing versus Barton

 

HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF

- Catawba College 100 percent of parking revenue and funds raised throughout the game to SAC institutions in need due to the effects of Hurricane Helene

- Fans will be encouraged to scan the Q-R code on the video board to donate to Mars Hill University and Tusculum University
